Welcome to The Environmental Illness Resource

The Environmental Illness Resource is an information resource and interactive community site for people suffering from a range of chronic illnesses which are poorly understood and for which there is currently very limited healthcare available. We have chosen to group these conditions under the title of 'Environmental Illnesses' and they include chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia, multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), and allergies. Detailed descriptions of all the illnesses we cover can be found in the 'Illness Overviews' menu.

New testing offers hope for irritable bowel syndrome patients

The IBS Treatment Center is to use PCR testing technology to aid in getting to the root causes of individual cases of irritable bowel syndrome.

They say the new testing technique will allow for more accurate determination of the microbial balance of patients' intestines. This could then lead to more precisely tailored and effective treatment.

The Center, based in Seattle in the US, has always aimed to determine the underlying causes of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in each individual patient. This is in contrast to standard medical care for the condition which is limited to ruling out more serious conditions, like cancer, and offering generic dietary and lifestyle advice such as altering intake of fibre.

Continued pesticide use challenged in US

A coalition of environmental and farm workers groups has now sued the US government over the continued use of four hazardous pesticides.

The legal action is being taken by groups including the United Farm Workers, the Teamsters, Pesticide Action Network North America, Beyond Pesticides and the Natural Resources Defense Council. The suit challenges the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2006 decision to reauthorize the use of four pesticides used on fruit and vegetable fields in California.

The coalition argue that the government has ignored its own evidence that the chemicals are toxic to farm workers, children, and animals.
