Welcome to The Environmental Illness Resource

The Environmental Illness Resource is an information resource and interactive community site for people suffering from a range of chronic illnesses which are poorly understood and for which there is currently very limited healthcare available. We have chosen to group these conditions under the title of 'Environmental Illnesses' and they include Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalopathy (ME/CFS), Fibromyalgia, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), and allergies.

We currently have over 2000 pages of news, articles, research abstracts and original content regarding environmental illnesses and the treatment options available. We are currently visited by around 60,000 people like you every month so please get involved, post in the forums, write a blog, or review books and products (see the help section or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   if you need a helping hand!)

Early autism detection techniques under development

Researchers are using 3D imaging techniques in an attempt to detect early differences between autistic and healthy children.

Scientists at the University of Missouri in the US hope that their work will lead to the development of tests for the early detection of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs).

Autism is a developmental disorder which affects a child's ability to socialise, relate to others and communicate and also leads to other behavioural difficulties. Cases are thought to be on the rise with most estimates suggesting 1 child in 150 now has some form of ASD.

Fibromyalgia pain reduced by hypnosis

New research suggests that the pain felt by fibromyalgia patients can be significantly reduced through the use of hypnosis and suggestion.

In a collaboration between the University of Birmingham and University College London, in the UK, a team of researchers used fMRI scans to determine whether fibromyalgia patients could be taught to cope better with painful sensations through a combination of suggestion and hypnosis.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition in which patients experience physical pain throughout their body as well as other debilitating symptoms such as fatigue and cognitive difficulties. The pain is often severe and can affect the ligaments, tendons and muscles. There seems to be no physical reason for the pain of fibromyalgia and the cause of the condition remains unknown. It is thought however that the problem may lie with how the brain processes pain and other sensations.
