Have you been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome? Do you have loose stools, constipation or avoid certain foods because you feel uncomfortable when you eat them? You may have a problem with your gut health if you answered yes. Your gut is actually outside of your body and it prevents foreign invaders from entering the body as well as absorbing essential nutrients from food. How do you know if you are absorbing all the nutritional supplements you are currently taking?
Your gut contains more nerve cells than your entire spinal cord and every neurotransmitter that is produced in the brain is also found in the gut. So as you can see a healthy digestive system is crucial for overall health.
Many people who have digestive issues have a parasite of some sort residing in their intestines. Due to immigration, importation of produce, lack of food handler screening, pets and agricultural pollution to name a few, our risk of infection is greatly increasing. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 1/4 of the world’s population is infected at any one time.
Parasites are mainly picked up through the fecal-oral route by touching infected food or water. An unhealthy gut is especially vulnerable because the immune system defenders that line the gut are greatly reduced. This can be caused by excessive antibiotic use, chemotherapy and a poor diet. In order to diagnose infection by parasite, a stool analysis must be performed. Once the type of parasite is detected it can be eradicated with natural medicines such as: oil of oregano, allicidin (garlic extract), black walnut, wormwood etc. I put my patients on a four to six week sterilization period, which kills the parasite and any yeast or pathogenic bacteria as well. During this time a good probiotic is taken to reinnoculate the beneficial bacteria, which are also killed by the natural medicines.
A particularly interesting parasite is Yersinia Enterocolitica. Yersinia lays eggs along the intestinal tract and the body makes antibodies to these eggs. Unfortunately the antibodies also attack the thyroid gland and can cause Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Hashimoto’s is basically hypothyroidism due to destruction of the thyroid gland by the body’s own antibodies.
Take the necessary steps to prevent infection by: washing hands, strict personal hygiene, wash produce and restrict pets from certain areas of the home. It is the opinion of most alternative health care practitioners that it is impossible to achieve optimum health without a properly functioning digestive system.
I use a German lab to test stool samples as they are years ahead of our labs. Patients always get a kick out of knowing that their stool is being flown to Germany for analysis. You will be amazed at how wonderful you feel when your gut is happy and healthy.
