Gonorrhea affects an estimated number of 820,000 people each year in the United States alone, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is also estimated that among these individuals, 570,000 are young people who are 15 to 24 years of age and are sexually active.

It is true that gonorrhea isn’t as life-threatening as HIV, but it doesn’t mean that a person who has contracted it doesn’t have to do anything about it. Still, it can cause symptoms that bring pain and discomfort, interfering normal daily activities. Feelings of shame could also be a normal part of the bad effects of acquiring a sexually transmitted disease.

Worst of all, gonorrhea could lead to more serious reproductive health problems including infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). This could be easily avoided through early diagnosis and treatment. Good news is, gonorrhea is a treatable condition. You just need to find out if you have it, early on.

What is Gonorrhea?

As mentioned, gonorrhea is transmitted through sexual intercourse. A bacterium called Neisseria gonorrhoeae or gonococcus causes it. When a person is infected, these bacteria thrive mainly in a female’s vaginal fluid or in a man’s genital discharge. Thus, gonorrhea is easily contracted from one person to another through unprotected vaginal, oral, or anal sex. Once acquired, it can infect the cervix, urethra, or rectum. Although less common, it may also affect the eyes or the throat.

A pregnant woman might also pass on this disease to her baby through vaginal delivery. Gonorrhea poses serious risks to babies because it may cause permanent blindness. Therefore, if a woman is pregnant and she suspects that she contracted gonorrhea, she should get tested immediately and ask her trusted doctor for advice regarding safe medications and other measures that need to be done in order for her to avoid passing on the infection to her child.

Meanwhile, gonorrhea isn’t spread through other forms of physical contact such as kissing or hugging. Sharing baths, towels, utensils, cutlery, swimming pools, and toilet seats couldn’t spread the gonorrhea-causing bacteria as well. The human body is the only ideal breeding ground for it. Thus, it cannot survive outside the human body for a long time.

How to Know if You Have Been Infected with Gonorrhea

Studies show that 1 out of 10 men and 5 out of 10 women who have been infected with gonorrhea show no apparent symptoms at all. Therefore, a person might be living with gonorrhea without knowing it.

On the other hand, if symptoms do show up some time later, these could include unusual yellow or green vaginal discharge, pain or burning sensation when urinating, pain in the lower abdomen, and bleeding between periods or after sex. In men, symptoms could include a white, yellow, or green discharge from the tip of the penis, pain or burning sensation when urinating, swelling of the foreskin, and in rare occasions, pain in the testicles.

Gonorrhea infection in the throat may not cause any symptoms. In the eyes, however, this could cause conjunctivitis, while in the rectum, the infection could cause pain or discharge.

Whether or not a person who suspects he has been infected with gonorrhea experiences the symptoms mentioned, the sure way to know what’s causing it is to get tested. After all, the symptoms are quite similar with other sexual health issues apart of gonorrhea.

Why Opt for a Gonorrhea Home Test Kit?

There are several ways on how you can get yourself tested if you suspect you’ve acquired gonorrhea. First is to schedule a medical check-up with your trusted doctor and second is to use at-home testing kit for gonorrhea.

Setting a medical appointment is ideal for some, since we’ve been used to this ever since. However, some may find it a hassle to deal with long queues, less privacy, and even finding an ideal spot on your schedule to set a medical appointment. With that in mind, home test kits for gonorrhea have been created.

What are the advantages of getting tested at home anyway?

  • It’s fast and convenient.
When you opt for a home test kit, you don’t need to set a medical appointment and go to the doctor’s office. You do the testing yourself by carefully following the given set of instructions on the manual. This offers convenience since you can get tested at the comfort of your home, at a time that’s most ideal for you.

  • It’s easy and safe.
Home test kits for gonorrhea are safe. The instructions on the manual are easy to follow as well. You’ll be instructed to collect a bodily sample that you’ll later send in a sealed envelope to the laboratory for testing. Afterwards, all you need to do is to wait for the result. • It’s more private.
Apparently, getting tested at home is more private than in a doctor’s office where there are many other people including nurses, other employees, and other patients who might find out about your condition. When you get yourself tested at home and find out you’re negative, then, you can move on after. On the other hand, if you’re gonorrhea-positive, you can take your result to the doctor’s office and proceed to discussing the ideal medication for you right away, unless, your doctor might want to do repeat tests to confirm the initial result.

Gonorrhea is a treatable disease. However, if a person suspects that he has been infected with it, he should get tested immediately so that he can undergo medication as soon as possible and avoid serious complications later on.
