Welcome to The Environmental Illness Resource
The Environmental Illness Resource is an information resource and interactive community site for people suffering from a range of chronic illnesses which are poorly understood and for which there is currently very limited healthcare available. We have chosen to group these conditions under the title of 'Environmental Illnesses' and they include Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalopathy (ME/CFS), Fibromyalgia, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), and allergies.
We currently have over 2000 pages of news, articles, research abstracts and original content regarding environmental illnesses and the treatment options available. We are currently visited by around 60,000 people like you every month so please get involved, post in the forums, write a blog, or review books and products (see the help section or contact us if you need a helping hand!)
Eating nuts during pregnancy linked to childhood asthma
A new study suggests mothers who routinely eat nuts or nut products during pregnancy may be unwittingly increasing the chances of their child going on to develop asthma.
Researchers at Utrecht University in the Netherlands tracked the eating habits of over 4,000 pregnant women during the final month of their pregnancies. They asked the women to record how often they ate vegetables, fresh fruit, fish, eggs, milk, milk products, nuts and nut products. Many of the foods in these food groups are known to be common allergens.
The researchers were able to maintain contact with 2832 of the mothers after they gave birth and went on to collect data on their children. Each child was followed from birth to age 8. Their diets were monitored and special attention given to any allergies or symptoms of asthma that might have developed.
California ban on Bisphenol A and Perfluorochemicals moves a step closer
Bills which would see Bisphenol A and perfluorochemicals banned from products in the state of California have passed the state Senate and all required Assembly committees.
The legislation sponsored by Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit organisation, would ban Bisphenol A (BPA) from baby bottles and children's cups through bill SB 1713 and would ensure food products are free from perfluorochemicals (PFCs) through bill SB 1313.
BPA is used to soften plastic and is an 'endocrine disrupter', in other words it interferes with hormones in the human body. PFCs are Teflon-like chemicals which are known to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing).
