A new law was signed by President Obama that limits the amount of formaldehyde in wood and furniture. The law is expected to improve the health of residents by making homes greener over the next three years.
Formaldehyde is a respiratory toxicant commonly found in press wood cabinets and furniture, which are formed with sawdust and formaldehyde glues.
Opponents are claiming higher prices will ensue in an attempt to instill fear into consumers to encourage support of formaldehyde laden furniture. They say that the new lower formaldehyde furniture could increase costs by up to 15%. That means that a $1,000 item might increase to as much as $1,150.
Supporters say the $150 is nothing compared to the benefits. Consider the lifelong cost of treating asthma and cancer, two conditions related to formaldehyde exposure. The annual health care cost is estimated for a patient with these conditions in the tens of thousands.
Furniture manufacturers who already sell greener furniture say that added cost has not impacted sales. After all, if you don´t have your health, nothing else matters.
