Skin, Health & Beauty: The Importance of Cleansing Within

by Gloria Gilbère, N.D., D.A.Hom., PhD.

Skin: A Reflection of Inner Health

Wholistic and natural health practitioners look at the skin as mirroring a myriad of health problems – a reflection of internal health connected to specific toxic overload within the body. Developing an understanding of toxic overload, resulting skin problems, and the importance of cleansing within will help guide you to a healthier beautiful skin and a renewed overall well-being.

Toxic Overload Defined

Every moment, we are exposed to thousands of toxic chemicals in air, water, food, household & laundry products, personal care products, plastics, dry-cleaned clothing, wrinkle and stain-resistant treated fabrics, synthetic fragrances, food preservatives, additives, flavor enhancers, medications etc. We ingest, inhale and absorb these toxins – every one a foreign, un-natural substance which is either metabolized by our organs, or stored within the body.

Researchers at the U.S. Federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC) analyzed samples of blood and urine from 2,500 men, women and children and identified dozens of man-made chemicals that were being stored within the body, many within the soft and connective tissues.1-2

The body is continually on “auto-pilot” cleansing and rejuvenating itself without conscious effort. This entire bio-mechanical process was automatically activated while we were still in our mother’s womb and has continued 24/7 ever since. Unfortunately, because the detoxification processes are “invisible”, most individuals go about the process of daily living without giving any thought to the accumulated toxins stored within their bodies. When toxins are constantly “dumped” into the organs of detoxification faster than the organs’ ability to neutralize and cleanse the body effectively, this constant build-up literally prevents the life-force from manifesting health, beauty, energy and stamina.

When we add other lifestyle factors like dehydration, lack of exercise, excess caffeine, stress, anxiety, lack of dietary fiber and constipation, insufficient consumption of fresh vegetables and fresh, “live” foods, the body becomes malnourished and toxic – skin disorders being the manifestation.

The skin is the body’s largest organ of detoxification (absorption and elimination). It tries to support the body by excreting toxins, resulting in skin disorders – from serious skin problems and acne, to signs of premature aging and wrinkles – the skin reflects not just the health of the inner body but the level of toxic overload.

The following are examples of internal causes of skin problems:

Auto-intoxication – the process by which the body literally poisons itself by maintaining a cesspool of decaying matter in the large intestine. The toxins released “seep” into the bloodstream and every cell is affected, including skin cells. Many skin disorders are based in this condition including, but not limited to, acne, rosacea, psoriasis, hives, eczema, multiple allergies, and premature aging.

A congested liver – contributes to the build-up of toxins that can no longer be neutralized. The liver, the largest organ inside the body, is designed to be the processing plant for neutralizing toxic substances – once overburdened from the colon “dumping” substances quicker than it can neutralize them, disease, disorders, skin conditions and premature aging set in. The liver, the organ that purifies the bloodstream, is affected directly by the health of the large intestine and is capable of regenerating.

Compromised kidney function – the kidneys, or “master chemists” play a vital role in ridding the body of toxins, as do the liver and colon—the kidneys filter potentially dangerous impurities out of the blood and discard them daily through the bladder in the form of urine. The kidneys also help maintain normal chemistry level of cells, a health-enhancing acid/alkaline balance, and assist in the production of red blood cells, supporting skin health and beauty which is developed and maintained on a cellular level!

Parasites -- contribute to the overload of toxins in your body and weaken immune functions. Parasites thrive in the intestinal tract where they become “obese” when fed their favorite diet of sugars, processed and junk foods, excessive carbohydrates and Candida yeast. Parasites overload your system with their waste, which is then reabsorbed into the bloodstream. Scientists have identified over 300 types of parasites thriving in our American population—it’s not just a problem in underdeveloped countries! Some of the skin conditions resulting from parasitic infestation include psoriasis, blistering, reoccurring rashes, and allergic-type blotching.

Yeast overgrowth (Candida albicans) – a single-cell microorganism that develops feeding tubes called hyphae which grow directly into the intestinal walls causing them to become porous. This thinning of the intestinal walls allows toxins, undigested proteins and carbohydrates to flow through the bowel wall – absorbing into the body and blood, clinically known as intestinal permeability and commonly known as leaky gut syndrome.

Skin manifestations of yeast overgrowth include: hives, eczema, psoriasis, profuse sweating without physical exertion, acne, nail fungus, skin blotching and discoloration and redness on the face, neck and ears that is rough but not itchy or raised.

Facilitating Rejuvenation

My clinical experience has shown it is just as important to care for the skin from the inside as from the outside – maybe even more so. When you reduce the internal toxic load, you’ll have clearer, radiant skin because skin responds on a cellular level. Result: A more youthful appearance, healthier skin, more energy and stamina, and enhanced mental functions to help us think clearly, be focused and alert.

The following basic recommendations can assist you in drafting the “blueprint” on which you can rebuild and rejuvenate:

  • Supplement daily with professional vegetable fiber and herbal colon-cleanse tablets – taken anytime in the evening. (Act as intestinal “brushes” to remove colonic debris and keep it from re-circulating through the liver).
  • Consume half your body weight in ounces of water daily. Example: Weight 150 lbs. Water consumption 75 oz.
  • Perform a series of professional colon hydrotherapy sessions and maintenance by a certified therapist.
  • Support liver, kidney and lymph detoxification by using an herbal supplement formulated to detoxify and provide support to facilitate rejuvenation.
  • Drink 2-4 oz. of fresh, organic wheatgrass juice concentrate daily. The high chlorophyll content assists internal purification, kidney and blood cleansing, and rejuvenation of blood cell integrity.
  • Dry skin brush daily 1-2 times, best if just before showering to stimulate lymphatic flow for elimination of cell waste.
  • Jump on a Rebounder 5-7 minutes 1-2 times daily with only heels bouncing – ball of foot and toes always on matt. This action stimulates lymphatic and overall circulation for nutrient assimilation and debris elimination.
  • Avoid all foods in the “nightshade” genre, scientifically known to accelerate inflammation which is always present in premature aging. These include: tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, paprika, peppers (red, green, yellow, cayenne etc.) and tobacco products. In addition to “fueling the fire of inflammation”, this group of foods is believed to be addicting, as is tobacco – spas can create recipes for gourmet entrees with substitutions and provide cooking classes for their clients. Avoidance of nightshades is especially beneficial for clients with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Lupus, and Scleroderma, to mention a few inflammatory conditions.
  • Reduce sugars and simple carbohydrates to avoid “feeding” health-depleting organisms within the intestines.
  • Perform a homeopathic and condition-specific enzyme blend for parasite cleanse every six months for 2 weeks, under the guidance of a health professional.
  • Bathe in an organic seaweed detox infusion to assist in reducing the toxic load as well as relaxing muscles and tension.
