The Science behind Wheatgrass Juice and Health

by Gloria Gilbère, N.D., D.A.Hom., PhD.

“Until man duplicates a blade of grass, Nature can laugh at his so-called scientific knowledge.” – Thomas A. Edison

Anti-aging: Support for the youngest older generation ever!

“Wheatgrass juice is the nectar of rejuvenation, the plasma of youth, the blood of all life. The elements that are missing in our body’s cells – especially enzymes, vitamins, hormones, and nucleic acids can be obtained through this daily green sunlight transfusion."
– Rev. Viktoras Kulvinskas, Author of Survival into the Twenty First Century

Grasses are literally a storehouse of enzymes – without enzymes, life is not possible. Enzymes are the “spark of life” because they maximize the life energy of indogenous enzymes – those contained within our body. Like cells, enzymes lose their internal life-span capacity as well as their ability to neutralize toxins – especially important as we are exposed to more and more toxic substances we ingest, inhale and apply to our body.1 Anti-aging must occur from the inside-out. Skin and body rejuvenation is largely dependent on enzyme activity; wheatgrass juice provides just that….the spark to ignite the cellular renewal processes.

The body can instantly convert chlorophyll into fresh blood because its molecular structure is almost identical to that of human blood – supporting the anti-aging theory by maintaining healthy, clean blood to sustain health and vitality. With a continual natural renewal of blood supply, the body will age but does not manifest negative effect or appearance because of it.

According to research performed by Dr. Peter Rothschild, M.D. at Smith-Kline Bio-Science in Honolulu, HI 7, young grasses are excellent sources of superoxide dismutase (SOD), a powerful antioxidant and anti-aging enzyme. The results were reported by Steve Meyerowitz 6 as follows:
This human study used 70 year old (average age) seniors who are naturally slower to respond than a younger population. Nevertheless, the serum levels of the seniors increased an average of 230% overall in the group and as much as 730% in one individual. Seven of the 10 participants more than doubled their blood levels of SOD. This proves that wheat sprouts are an excellent source of SOD and that potency can be maintained in a supplement. The high levels of assimilation are likely due to the fact that the supplement is a whole foods concentrate with all of its synergistic co-nutritional factors.

Environmental Exposure: Toxins ingested, inhaled and applied to our skin

We live in a polluted world, like it or not. We breathe air currents that can come from across the globe – carrying toxic levels of petrochemicals (as from oil fires), high levels of carbon monoxide, cadmium and lead, and pesticides/insecticides, to mention a few.
We ingest food that is no longer “natural”, it contains nitrates, monosodium glutamate, artificial sweeteners, bleaching agents, synthetic chemicals, and ingredients to add color and flavor – all placing excessive strain on the major organs of detoxification including the liver, lungs, and kidneys.
The active ingredients in wheat grass juice are capable of cleansing the blood and neutralizing toxic substances.
According to Japanese scientists working with Dr. Yoshihide Hagiwara, M.D., enzymes and amino acids in young grass plants de-activated the carcinogenic and mutagenic effects of toxic chemicals including nitrogen compounds as those found in automobile exhaust. 2
It has been reported by Dr. Earp Thomas that one ounce of wheatgrass juice in a gallon of fluoridated water will convert the fluorine into a harmless calcium-phosphate-fluoride compound.
By placing a small amount (1/2 – 1 tsp. in 1 qt. of water) of wheatgrass juice concentrate into the water used for cleansing vegetables, it will neutralize the toxic sprays used on vegetables – then use the water for house or garden plants.

Detoxification: The road to wellness is paved with healthy intestines

“If only they knew, the use of grass is the most revolutionary concept introduced into the diet of society…In therapeutic amounts, wheatgrass internalizes a maximum of green chlorophyll and enzyme rich liquid food, to detoxify the body by increasing the elimination of hardened mucus, crystallized acids and solidified, decaying fecal matter. Its high enzyme content helps to dissolve tumors. It is the fastest surest way to eliminate internal waste and provide an optimum nutritional environment, so that the cosmic cell consciousness can rebuild your body.” – Rev. Viktoras Kulvinskas, M.S., Survival Into the 21st Century

It has been reported that chlorophyll also stimulates peristalsis, the muscle movement necessary for natural evacuation. In addition, it assists the lining of the intestines by neutralizing toxic substances and facilitating easy evacuation by its mild diuretic effects.

Immune Enhancement: Supporting our Defenses

We know that our immune functions, and the protection from infection and disease, depend on the work of our white blood cells providing the first-line of defense. Additionally, the body’s ability to fight illness, including cancer, is determined by the strength of our immune system.
The late Dr. Ann Wigmore1 demonstrated over and over at her healing center that in contrast to modern drugs to correct one symptom or another without effectively strengthening the overall state of health, wheatgrass juice provides the necessary ingredients to strengthen the body’s defenses to allow for healing. Wheatgrass juice acts as the body’s healing weapon by providing concentrated ammunition to build the arsenal of defenses against bacteria, viruses and yes, even cancer.
Scientists know that chlorophyll will create a health-enhancing intestinal environment by providing an eco-system that does not support the growth of health-depleting bacteria. By reducing and eliminating health-depleting bacteria, the intestinal integrity remains strong and able to protect us against disease-causing invaders.

Energy Production: Recharging our Battery

We know that substances found in roots of all young, growing plants contain root auxins. In Dr. Ann Wigmore’s writings, she cites research confirming experiments by botanists who “placed root auxins on the tip of a leaf, causing the root to grow on the edge of the leaf.” 1
Further studies were performed by the renowned Dr. Weston Price, founder of the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation, isolating a substance from tips of young grasses which had a similar effect to that of root auxins – showing the ability of tender grasses to promote and regenerate damaged cells.
Wheatgrass contains such an abundance of natural, whole-food vitamins, minerals, trace elements, and enzymes that it is literally a source of energy production fuel – requiring negligible energy to even digest. Because of its easy digestibility and rapid assimilation, it’s a natural energy supplement whether alone or added to a protein-type supplement drink.

“15 lbs. of wheat grass is equal in overall nutritional value to 350 pounds of ordinary garden vegetables. We have not even scratched the surface of what grass can mean to man in the future.” 5 – Charles F. Schnabel, Agricultural Chemist, The Father of Wheat Grass

Blood Integrity: The Flow of Life

“Before I was introduced to organic, kosher, wheatgrass juice concentrate; I didn’t believe anything except fresh juice would provide the health benefits known for centuries. I proceeded to have a live cell microscopy blood test performed to test its effectiveness. The test allows the patient to actually view their blood on a monitor along with the technician. I’ve had this type of blood test performed for over 10 years, to monitor my overall health and make simple adjustments when needed.
I had the test performed before starting a daily protocol of wheatgrass juice. I then juiced fresh juice daily for 90 days and was retested. The results were amazing – the integrity (health) of my red blood cells was impressive!
I then proceeded to use a very specialized wheatgrass juice concentrate, sold at the time under a different label, for the next 90 days. The integrity of my blood cells was exactly the same as when consuming freshly squeezed juice. The red blood cells were “free-floating” with increased seed (oxygen) and the cellular membrane was healthier. I had my blood tested every three months since developing leaky gut, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and multiple chemical sensitivities; therefore, I was a prime subject for monitoring the effectiveness (described in detail in my books “I was Poisoned by my Body” .
I have long since recovered and will always supplement daily with my wheatgrass juice concentrate. As my profession requires me to travel regularly, I use an additional “shot” on long flights and when I need that extra energy to fulfill my demanding schedule.”

– Gloria Gilbère, N.D., D.A.Hom., Ph.D.

Skin Disorders: Outward Manifestation of Inward Imbalances

Many skin disorders are actually inward manifestations of a toxic intestinal environment. That said, not only does the chlorophyll in wheatgrass juice assist intestinal disorders (ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel etc.), it also provides a soothing topical effect for burns (including sunburn), weepy abrasions, ivy exposure, and most disorders affecting the outer and inner layers of the skin. Any condition that involves irritation and itching, wheatgrass juice will alleviate and speed the healing processes.
Dr. Carroll Wright, professor of dermatology at Temple University in Philadelphia, used chlorophyll-rich ointments for a variety of skin disorders. His experiences proved especially helpful for skin ulcers and impetigo.

Radiation Protection: Not a pretty picture

Radiation exposure occurs in such procedures as medical and dental x-rays as well as x-ray detection devices as those used for security. Cells and tissue are affected by radiation exposure and may lead to serious eventual outcomes, depending on quantity, frequency and overall health. The negative health effects of radiation can be eliminated or greatly reduced by adding foods that are chlorophyll-rich. Chlorophyll is known to detoxify the liver, strengthen cell integrity, and detoxify and neutralize polluting elements and their effects.

“Graze Your Way to Health: Chemists and Staff thrive on Powdered Grass. New Food has more Vitamins than the Alphabet has Letters.”
– The Kansas City Star, April 8, 1940 Interview with Dr. W.R. Graham, C.F. Schnabel and G. Kohler.

DNA Repair: Reproducing Healthy Cells

The general public is just now paying attention to the effects of reproduction within the DNA matrix. A biologist at the University of California at San Diego, Dr. Yasuo Hotta, scientifically verified that a compound found in young grasses (P4D1) has the ability to stimulate the production and natural repair of human reproductive sperm cells and DNA.

Standard American Diet (SAD): Nutrient-deficient

“It was clear to me…the leaves of cereal grasses provide the nearest thing this plant offers to the perfect food…It is my belief that the steady depletion of that natural green power in the human diet, and its displacement by other nutrients of questionable value, constitutes the most serious threat of all to good health. “
– Dr. Yoshihide Hagiwara, Inventor, Medical Doctor, Researcher and Pharmacist

The Standard American Diet (SAD) is truly killing us, or at least shortening our life and the quality of it. We continually consume foods that are laden with preservative chemicals, flavor enhancers, fillers, and the unhealthy fats. Consumption of wheatgrass juice on a daily basis, whether alone as a “shot glass” full of the reconstituted drink or combined in a non-heated drink or on cold food, it’s nature’s best protection to continually reduce our internal toxic load.

Mouth and Gum Health: Open Wide!

The effectiveness of wheat grass juice in oral health has long been validated. However, the dental community was shocked when a dentist by the name of Homer Judkin, D.D.S., of the Paris Hospital in Paris, Illinois1 reported his findings after injecting chlorophyll in the gums of patients. The experience proved that chlorophyll eliminated the infection of trench mouth as well as advanced cases of gum disorders such as pyorrhea. Dr. Judkin stated “In less than thirty days the gums tightened up entirely, and have remained clean ever since.”
Natural chlorophyll alone is highly unstable, therefore, not practical. However, wheatgrass juice, with its concentrated natural chlorophyll, can be used on gums by soaking gauze and applying directly to the affected areas. Equally effective, after thorough brushing and flossing, is swishing the juice in the mouth and holding for a couple of minutes before swallowing.

Nature’s Deodorizer: Sweetening the Undesirable

The high quantity and quality of chlorophyll in wheatgrass, makes it a perfect deodorizer against body and breath odors from most sources including, but not limited to:
Tobacco, beverages, menstrual odors, perspiration, oral food odors, dental decay and infection, and patients with incontinence or an external medical device.

Cancer: The Dreaded “C” Word

The effects of live foods (wheatgrass, and synthetic Vitamin C) on cancer in laboratory mice were studied at the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine by Dr. Arthur Robinson. The scientists induced skin cancer through exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Their findings were reported in an article that appeared in March, 1984, titled Living Foods and Cancer,8 “The results were spectacular. Living foods [including wheatgrass] alone decreased the incidence and severity of cancer lesions by about 75 percent. This result was better than that of any nutritional program that was tried.”

Nobel-prize winner Otto Warburg, M.D., showed that cancer cells thrive in an oxygen-poor environment. “He viewed cancer not as a virus, but as a process of cell mutation caused by oxygen deprivation on the cellular level. Warburg arrived at his discovery more than fifty years ago, yet his theory still stands uncontradicted, while dozens of others are discredited every year.”1 Because wheatgrass juice is oxygen-rich, and up to 70% chlorophyll, it literally adds “life” to the cells and assists with the creation of healthy blood – the chlorophyll molecule resembles the molecule of human blood (hemoglobin).

Heart Matters:
According to Dr. Theodore M. Rudolph, the benefits of chlorophyll as an adjunct therapy and treatment for hardening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis) and high blood pressure (hypertension), is effective due to its high oxygen content, and its ability to cleanse matter from the walls of blood vessels.
It has been reported that chlorophyll increases the functions of the heart, affects the vascular system, the intestines, the uterus, and the lungs. It raises the basic nitrogen exchange and is therefore a tonic which, considering its stimulating properties, cannot be compared with any other nutrient. 3-4

Not all wheatgrass juice concentrates are grown, harvested and dehydrated in the same manner to retain the maximum integrity and health-enhancing properties of the product.
