Maff - you mention about taking antifungals with antibiotics. Have not heard that before. May I ask why you think this is necessary?

I agree with what Sammy says about \"kill as many of the bad guys as possible and then repopulate with the good guys\". However, I can't help but think that using antibiotics also kills of a lot of the good guys in the first place which may make things worse. I just don't understand why patients can't have just faecal transplantation first and then if it doesn't work then to maybe consider doing it again but this time with antibiotics. This seems logical to me as it perhaps reduces the risks.

On another forum I recently read about a retired nurse who said that many years ago they treated patients with about half a thumb sized piece of faeces from a healthy donor mixed with a milk shake and then drunk it with very good results. This was followed by someone else who reprted the same idea.
This makes good sense to me as it is much simpler than doing it by enema and it also means that the small intestine will be reached. It is also simpler than the nasal tube. This sounds quite compelling to me but I wonder about the effect of stomach acid.

Please keep me posted if you take LDN.

Tatina - thanks for the info on Dirk Budka. Without me discarding him immediately can I ask how many of your friends had problems with him and what were the problems? Was it just a case of him asking for lots of money and then giving lotos of tests but no improvement in symptoms?

Well the plain fact is that bacteria are not the only opportunistic microbes in the gut. If you have a situation where bacteria have been able to grow out of control (due to impaired immunity, overuse of broad spectrum antibiotics, hypochlorhydria etc) then it seems logical to assume that yeast/fungi, and perhaps parasites, will have gained a foothold as well. If this is the case then antifungals and antiparasitic agents would be required along with antibiotics prior to the HPI to sterilise the gut. Just my opinion from personal experience and looking at the available evidence.

I see your point. In the home HPI protocol literature you sent me it actually says that human faeces is a great antibiotic so surely it would be worth trying it alone. Having said that...if HPI is as successful as it seems to be it won't matter too much if beneficial bacteria are killed along with the less desirables with the antibiotics as they will be replaced anyway.
The milkshake doesn't sound too appealing but it would definitely be a much cheaper and simpler way to do it if it works. There aren't supposed to be huge amounts of microbes in the small intestine so I imagine small amounts of faeces would contain enough beneficial organisms to make a significant difference. All speculation at this point though!

Will keep you posted on LDN and everything else I'm doing. Hope you do the same. Good luck!

It seems we're not the only ones interested in HPI and Borody's work...the media seems to be really picking up on it.

Here's a new article published today (with a great title!) in The Scientist magazine - 'Same Poop, Different Gut'

I am very encouraged that Borody treats IBS anf CFS patients. I was expecting a battle to convince someone of its potential therapeutic benefit in someone suffering from these conditions rather than C. diff.

Maff - very interesting.
I don't suppose you have any clout with any doctors in the UK to encourage them to try this on us do you?

Sadly not. I think it would have to be a gastroenterologist. Without this specialism I suspect there would be uncomfortable questions asked by the GMC and the like.

Hopefully the media interest and seemingly excellent results will encourage other doctors closer to home to start doing HPI. Time will tell!
