Bifantis only probiotic effective in irritable bowel syndrome according to research review

#1 3 years ago
This thread discusses the Content article: Bifantis only probiotic effective in irritable bowel syndrome according to research review

\"P&G has worked with Alimentary Health to study and develop a supplement with Bifantis because we firmly believe in the benefits of this strain for the millions of Americans struggling to manage digestive upsets each day.\"

For a probiotic that was discovered and researched outside the US, it is a bit annoying that you can only buy it in Align, which is not available outside America.

I wanted to have a look at it, and did manage to get some delivered to the UK - but not without paying a large surcharge to the UK Customs service.

Incidentally, anyone finding the cost of some of these probiotic products prohibitive might find this useful:

Hi GaryTiv!

Do you mean the £8 Royal Mail \"handling fee\"?

In theory, you don't have to pay this, as long as you fill out the customs forms yourself. I'm yet to try this is practice, but all the details are set out in this blog post.

Let us know if you have any success.

Hi guys,

In my experience, small and/or inexpensive (if declared on shipping papers) packages sent by Air Mail often get through with no VAT or customs charges.

If the products are sent by courier however you usually get hit. I regularly buy from www.iherb.com and have parcels shipped by DHL as they are very quick (typically 2-3 days US to UK). DHL automatically pay applicable VAT and customs charges and then send me an invoice for these soon after. I'm sure this is the same with all such companies.

If you want to save on these charges therefore, my advice is to keep purchases small and use Air Mail - you'll just have to wait a little longer to get your items!

Post edited by: Maff, at: 2009/04/28 21:30

Hi Maff!

If the goods are worth less than £18 then the VAT is waived.

Customs duty is waived if the goods are worth less than £120 or the duty is less than £7. All the details are on the HMR&C web site.

In the past, they seemed to let stuff through if it was only a little over the limits. Now they seem to enforce the limits very strictly, and so you're much more likely to get hit with the Royal Mail fee, which is often twice the VAT payable.
