Hello all. I am desparate and trying to find someone, anyone out there that suffers from what I do.
FIrst of all I am a 25 year old female living in Liverpool, England. I had loads of allergies as a kid including hayfever and dust/pet allergies. When I reached age 20 I also began getting sick whenever I was around perfumes. I had to stop wearing them completely a few years ago and since then I have become sensitive to more and more things.
I really don't know what to do now, I am practically trapped in my own home. I guess what I have is MCS. How do others deal with this? Are there any doctors out there that anybody knows of?
Please help, I'm so depressed with this

Hi Hayles,
Sounds like you're having a rough time. Hopefully we can point you in the right direction. First of all though you should know that it is entirely possible to recover from MCS and environmental illness and get your life back so always have hope
Another visitor recently posted a message similar to yours which I wrote a long answer to and other members also contributed. Please have a look at that at http://www.ei-resource.org/index.php?option=com_joomlaboard&Itemid=6&func=view&id=70&catid=7
If you want to talk some more then it's fine to reply here.
Take care,
maff

Hi Hayles,
I have been working on my own condition for years but there are still times when a passerby with fragrance can practically drop me to my knees in public.
Fragrance is a deception word for industrial chemicals that are protected as 'proprietary ingredients' by regulatory agencies who work for the Fragrance Industry. There is no other way to say it.
If you study perfumes, etc. and read old National Geographic articles (the pages of National Geographic magazine are treated with a pesticide to keep them undamaged for one-hundred years - so wear a mask) then you will see that the expensive perfumes use everything from skunk scent to whale vomit (I really can't make this stuff up). Commercial grade scents use cheap volatizers (chemicals that make the smell spread in the air) that range from formaldehyde to cyclohexane/cyclohexanone and alcohols that are actually dangerous to the user because it drives it into the skin of the user.
If you study the work of Dr. Theron Randolph, you will see that allergy and addiction are the same thing, so people who initially got 'hooked' on fragrances continue to use them because they are addicted to them just like any street chemical.
To address your specific question, I had to approach the problem from the chemistry of the offending agents.
According to Jeffery Bland, people with MCS usually have a problem with Sulfoxidation. The pathway that allows this to happen is regulated by Molybdenum. Some people with MCS can tolerate this trace element some can't. NEVER take excessive amounts of trace elements as they can build up and be a problem themselves, but in their recommended dose they should be helpful. Molybdenum will help detoxify the formaldehydes and other aldehydes that you are either exposed to or metabolize after an exposure.
For me it wasn't a cure-all. The problem is that a fragrance has so many things in it (chloroform, essential plant oils that in themselves can be toxic, adhesives to make the perfume stick, etc) that you may be reacting to one class of chemicals or the whole soup.
NO ONE knows what happens in the blood when multiple industrial chemicals arrive all at the same time.
A general protective plan would be to use Vitamin D to heal vaccine damage and Hylamist as a protective barrier for your sinuses. Vitamin C if you are a slow Phase I detoxifier or liquid Amino Acids (soy sauce) if you are a slow Phase II detoxifier.
There are A LOT of chemicals that HAVE NO ODOR AT ALL! This means that if you were able to tell what you are exposed to by the smell (some people can recognize things like ketones - fingernail polish remover) you wouldn't be able to tell what class of chemical was making you ill because you can't smell it and the ingredients are secret. At that level, you will probably have to wear a carbon filter like Maff says because there is no other way to protect yourself from something you can't smell and get fair warning to get away from.
This is air pollution and there are 5 agencies in the US that deal with this but none are willing or able to fix it.
Dr. Carl Pfeiffer, Mental and Elemental Nutrients suggests a full 24 hour fast with only water to see if your allergies go away. If they do then you have a microbe overgrowth in your guts.
Hang in there.

WOW!
Thanks for giving me so much information both f you. I don't know how you manage to learn so much but it's all really interesting and I'll do my best to take it all on board.
It makes me feel better just knowing that others with the same problems as me are so positive, hopefully it will rub off.
I'm going to try to see Dr. Myhill but I hear she doesn't take too many new patients. If you know any other doctors in the UK please let me know.
Thanks again,
Hayley

You're welcome.
School of Hard Knocks is all I have to say about learning this.
The quicker you can treat the problem the less probability that it will spread to other things (that's why it's called Multiple Chemical Sensitivity)
Keep us posted on how you are doing and what works for you. I have noticed that since everyone is biologically unique it takes unique treatment for each person to improve but from my experience we try to mix and match therapies to see if they help.
A word about therapies in general:
You can have a good therapy but it may not work because your body is not ready.
I had lymph massage once (emphasis on the once) but my liver was so congested that I felt worse than before I got it.
So the object is to work on the system that is causing the bottleneck and then if the other problems don't resolve then to work on them next.
