DHEA & Hypothyroidism

#1 2 years, 1 month ago
I just wanted to give you all an update on how I am doing with DHEA supplementation, which I'm taking to increase glutathione levels.

I've always had to take a very high dose of Armour Thyroid to get me to the normal range (2 1/4 grains). I've been on this dose for 10 years! This never made sense to my doctor or myself. After taking extremely small amounts of DHEA (1/2 of 5mg capsule daily), after 2 weeks, I was experiencing major HypERthyroidism. I thought only cortisol affected the thyroid. This was a pleasant surprise. This just totally makes sense to me. My adrenal test back in '03 showed low levels of DHEA, and now I find this is the missing piece of the puzzle for my thyroid. I have been able to decrease thyroid dose to 1 grain, 60 mg!

Now my challenge is to determine how high I can go with the DHEA without overdosing on estrogen and testosterone and thyroid. I have to say that trying to regulate all these hormones is difficult, but I believe it is worth the effort. Don't know how long it will take to see if DHEA helps with the MCS?!

Here's hoping!

Hi Lynn,

It's great to hear you are feeling much better having added DHEA to your treatment regime. It's no surprise that your thyroid function has been helped. Although cortisol is the only adrenal hormone directly required for thyroid function (T4 > T3 conversion), DHEA and healthy adrenal function as a whole are required to enable the body to cope with stress...and stress can reduce thyroid function.

Juggling hormones can certainly be difficult and also potentially dangerous. You should therefore be under the care of a professional if at all possible.

Just a final point I had wanted to make previously but couldn't find where you had posted it! DHEA will NOT increase glutathione - if anything the opposite. DHEA is a steroid which requires detoxification by Phase II pathways...including glutathione conjugation and sulphation. DHEA therefore uses up glutathione in its metabolism both directly and by using up sulphur containing amino acids which are required to synthesise it

Hi Maff,

All I know is that DHEA has eliminated my need for Thyroid supplementation 100%.

The information I got regarding DHEA and Glutathione was from a reference book in whole foods regarding supplements. It states that NAC and DHEA increase glutathione levels. I guess there is a variety of information out there. Maybe it is wrong.

I am supplementing in a new way, so hoping that this helps with the MCS. All I care about is helping myself and others. If this works for me, it may work for someone else.

Thanks for the response.

Hi Lynn,

Any luck with DHEA helping with your MCS? My DHEA levels were normal but I am going to ask my Dr. about it anyways. My MCS is at it's worst right now and looking for anything that will help.

Thanks,
Karen

Hi there
I’ve been taking DHEA for last 5 weeks combined with PPC and gluten free amusingly I do feel really relieved from pain now which one is making me feel better I cannot tell? I do still smell products strongly however much less aggressive pain as I used to. Could anyone tell which site in Europe is providing safe and truly vegetable DHEA? DHEA seems a highly attractive and growing business but too confusing I must say.

Best Regards

Hi Mariam,

Great to hear that your treatment program is really helping your pain after only 5 weeks. DHEA helped me overcome MCS and improved my mood and helped me sleep - I too started to see its effects very quickly. I will soon be starting intravenous PPC as part of treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/M.E. and my other remaining problems.

To be honest I always bought DHEA from iHerb and other discount online retailers in the US as it was simply cheaper than buying from UK suppliers and if you use DHL or UPS it doesn't take any longer to reach you. The prices for DHEA supplements from UK online retailers is very high and I suspect this is the same for most European countries.

I hope you continue to see improvements
