Seeking Midwest info

#1 1 year, 11 months ago
Hi-
I have \"occupational asthma\". There is something going on with my office building. My doctor is sytrongly advising me to quit work. I am looking for a second opinion before I make any drastic changes, and would like to get a second option regardless. I live in Wisconsin. I'm looking for suggestions for Mds or other disciplies in the midwest, but would be willing to go further. Thanks for your help!

Hi guentner, and welcome!

I saw a nurse practitioner, a GP, two toxicologists, an allergist, and a neurologist for my problem with environmental sensitivities that destroyed my 20 year career...

I work in healthcare myself, so I know a bit of the terminology, and I would scour the internet for several hours every day after work, following up on what my doctors had said and exploring other options myself.

After hundreds of hours of research, I eventually found some supplements that worked for me and I and got well again. Ironically, my cure came not so much from alternative medicine, but from research doctors, who have found treatments for many conditions that simply have not been adopted by mainstream medicine yet.

These research doctors write-up their findings and publish them in scientific journals, but mainstream doctors seem to want to \"wait\" until these research doctors theories have been \"proven\" before they are even willing to try them. They just go by what they have learned in medical school (often decades ago), and play it safe with tried and true methods.

Doctors really are hit and miss... It's rare to find one who is willing to take the time to research your problem. They'll all say: \"Asthma? You can take steroids and continue to work, eventually suffering the side effects of the steroids, or you can retire\". You're likely to hear this from most any doc you might find. Removal from triggering agents and/or steroids is their cookie cutter answer for asthma.

Unfortunately, there really is no substitute for grinding things out on the internet and becoming your own doctor when it comes to tricky conditions like asthma and other conditions the medical field is still floundering in. The up-side of this is, the eureka moments and improvement you make on your own is truly rewarding.

It did take me 3 years to find the answers myself, but I'm back at work now (in a different hospital) and feeling better than ever.

The \"Life Extension Foundation\" www.lef.org has one of the best databases on diseases of all kinds and the supplements and treatments research doctors are using to form new therapies. Their articles are all fully referenced and the language is easy for folks without extensive knowledge of medical terminology. Use the search window in the upper right of their main page and see what you can find.

Hi bolan56
I really appreciate your comprehensive and helpful reply. I will check out the website you recommended. Are there any particular supplements you found helpful? Did you figure out what you were reacting to?
Thanks again,

I believe my problem was caused by a biocide (phenoxyethanol) added to a detergent we were using to clean/disinfect medical equipment.

Believe my problem was mitochondrial dysfunction caused by the glycols/phenols and contributed to by a wee bit of alcohol I used to imbibe in after work.

The astrocyte cells of the blood brain barrier are rich in mitochondria and demand a lot of work from them. When the mitochondria fail, the blood brain barrier breaks down and allows lipophilic molecules (glycols & petroleum products) through, plunging me into a hell I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Mitochondrial support supplements (phospholipids and others) fixed me up quite nicely. I thank God for the internet and sites like this one that helped me learn I was not alone, and there are answers to most every problem.

All the information on this was well known to research specialists around the world, problem is, no doctor I saw was hip to what was going on. I had to find my cure myself. It took a long time and a lot of work, but the learning experience changed my life forever.

Good Luck & GodSpeed to you!
