Hi Heru,

If you are going to undertake a nutritional and herbal supplement program as extensive as this I would strongly recommend you work with a doctor, naturopath or nutritionist and/or herbalist.

Herbs and nutrients can have many effects beyond those you are taking them for and they also potentially interact with each other so taking them all without supervision may actually do more harm than good!

The herbs and nutrients you mention are generally considered safe at modest dosages as far as I am aware from my own studies and personal experience. One thing that sticks out as a possible concern to me is vitamin A and raw liver/liver extract, since liver also contains considerable amounts of vitamin A and this vitamin is fat-soluble and can be toxic in relatively large amounts.

I would recommend you work with a healthcare practitioner who practices functional medicine as they will help determine if you have problems with detoxification and exactly what these problems are. This way treatment can be tailored to your particular problem and you will probably save a lot of money in the long term as you won't be taking supplements you don't need

Good luck!

Hi,
I Agree with Maff, work with a doctor. I have gotten relief from ME symptoms in the past by taking high doses of vitimin A... BUT I have to have a blood test for liver emzymes before and after treatment. I can only do the treatment every two weeks. All the best.

As Patty has illustrated, vitamin A can be toxic stuff when taken in large doses. It is a fat-soluble vitamin which means it has a propensity to accumulate in body tissues. This is in contrast to water-soluble vitamins (B complex, C etc), excess of which is easily excreted in urine and is why your urine will turn bright yellow after taking B complex supplements.

To complicate matters beta-carotene is fat-soluble yet does not seem to accumulate in the liver and other tissues to toxic levels as retinol (the active form of vitamin A from animal sources) does. Beta-carotene certainly seems therefore to be a safer way to supplement vitamin A.

No nutrient works in isolation in the body however and this is as true when it comes to antioxidant action as for anything else. Rather than taking large doses of a single antioxiodant such as vitamin A/beta-carotene therefore, a better approach perhaps is to include a large range of antioxidant-rich foods in your diet and take a broad spectrum antioxidant supplement, or use individual antioxidant supplements but in modest dosages.

It is very hard to determine what the safe upper limit for beta-carotene is and I am not qualified to give you personal advice. The limits set by national health authorities in different countries vary and are usually on the very cautious side. Doctors and nutritionists will often recommend much higher dosages of supplements to help people with specific illnesses.

My personal experience with vitamin A and beta-carotene is that 10,000iu/day does not cause me any problems despite me having signs of mild, chronic hepatitis and liver enzymes that are periodically slightly elevated (and were before I started taking any vit A).

My advice would be to stick to modest dosages of supplements unless working with a healthcare professional who is experienced in nutritional medicine.

All the best,

Maff
