DISCOVERY CHANNEL SHOW WANTS TO HEAR YOUR STORY

#1 3 years, 7 months ago
Has something from your environment made you sick? You’re not alone. It is estimated that 24 % of all disease are somehow tied to environmental hazards such as chemicals, fumes, pollution, allergens—even noise. Yet, symptoms of
environmental illnesses are difficult to diagnose and are often mistaken for other medical problems.

An exciting new Discovery Channel: Green series is searching for people who want to tell their stories about environmental illness and their road to diagnoses.

Qualified participants must have been successfully diagnosed and treated (we are not doctors and can not help you get treatment), and you and your physician must be willing to talk about your medical journey on camera. We
are approaching these stories from a green angle and are hopeful that your story may help and educate others.

Please contact us if interested.

Thank you.

I would have been ideal for any program except for the part where my physiaian would have to be involved. That is the real joke actually.
I moved home about 14 years ago away from the only physician who was ever involved in my diagnosis.
Since then after several more moves and three more physicians none of them even read the details from those years and I have learned to try to manage without any understanding as that helps to keep me from being labelled 'weird'
Recently the only way I had of dealing with a problem was to insist that my present doctor 'updated my records' (I had only been going to him for 5 years.)
That was the only way I could think of to force him to look back in my records and find it all written there.
He showed enormous surprise at the records about something he had never heard of. He assured me that it was O.K. as it was all there. I sat stoney faced and repeated my request to have it updated so that in any emergency anyone could find it easily. At least that was done.
After increasing illness and problems about 14 years ago my 'allergy/sensitivities' to chemicals became suspected.
Only then was I able to read up about such a thing and my doctor managed to get me into a special Allergy center in West Yorkshire. I spent three weeks in there. Though I said I had no allergies to foods at all I was amazed to find that I actually 'reacted' to 36 out of the 38 foods tested on me.
Approximately 20 chemicals were tested on me.
I reacted to every single one.
All of those testings included blind testing etc.
There was no chance therefor of any mistaken diagnosis. I had neutralising injections every other day for more than a year and gradually became able to 'manage' my life but only then and still now -- by avoidance.
I am forced to because the main symptom of my illness is Asthma. It was shown to be allegy induced asthma and because of the extent of my chemical sensitivities I was also 'allergic' to asthma inhalers so I have no medication.
I just must not have an attack.
There is an article written by me on this website called 'An Allergic's Struggle.'
That does give the story up to the diagnosis in better detail should you care to look it up.
Mine was a proper diagnosis by one of this country's leading allergy specialists. Unfortunately because the N.H.S. declined to continue to fund patients any longer , the clinic closed some years ago.

Quite apart of not being able to have any support from a different doctor so many years later. I wonder how much you might have considered about the difficulties presented in trying to arrange any kind of television or suchlike.
You need someone who is or has been very sick. Someone who has been properly diagnosed by a specialist. Someone who now understands their reactions and illness. That person just might not even be able to travel or be near to cameras or mix with people wearing perfumed products. There are a multitude of difficulties in the path of such an arrangement.
Sorry to put the dampners on the idea but it won't be easy.
I was aked to do such an interview some years ago on the Gloria Hunniford T.V. program at short notice.
I agreed, and arrangements were made for my husband to accompany me me and we were to be staying in a London Hotel.
THEN I said that Gloria Hunniford would not have to use any perfume (which caused concern about having to ask her to do that.) That must have been a warning signal that an ALLERGIC person might actually have allergies which could badly affect them in a studio enviroment. A swift phone call back told me that the health and safety officer had said it would be too risky and so it was cancelled as far as I was concerned.
I was almost amused at their attempt to dabble in allergies with realising any risk to the participant.
I was less pleased the following day watching the program only to find my substitute being interviewed was a lady who only had skin reactions to soap.
I was bitterly disappointed not to be able to strike that blow for all of us who's lives are so badly affected by chemicals.
Most importantly you need someone who actually can put this over without making a mess of it and not getting the real points and seriousness over.Without thet you stand to actually damage the image of how we are perceived by the numerous 'doubters'
I dont't mean to be rude but we get so little positive publicity.
It is a massive responsibility to get it right if you go ahead. I do believe I understand and know enough about so many of the problems. At one time I was a telephone support contact for The British Allegy Foundation (Now called Allergy U.K.)
I might have been useful to you if it had not been for the doctor support bit.
I would be the most grate ful patient in Britain if only my doctor understood anything whatever about my problems.
Please feel free to reply if I can help you in any way. Have you seen my entry on the forum 'Chemical Clothing'? It is real fun when even clothing can affect you.
