I have contacted you before and you were very helpful.
I would like you to consider the following as I would welcome your advice please :-
My friend has an old house out in the country. I stayed there 3 times over a two year period. Each time I awoke at 4.30 in the morning feeling very nauseous and needing to open my bowels. The bad nausea lasted about 4 hours and then I made a complete recovery over the next day or so. I was completely well and healthy before and between the visits to his house.
However, the 2nd and 3rd time were only two weeks' apart and whilst I made a complete recovery from the 3rd visit a week later the same thing happened at my own house.
This pattern continued at my house several more times until in the end I felt unwell all of the time. That was 14 months ago and despite numerous tests plus a surgical operation I am still unwell with digestive upset, the worst being nausea.
I do not believe I have IBS because my bowel movements are normal and I am 54 years old with no history of GI problems. I cannot help thinking that there must be something that happened when I stayed at my friend's house. It is surely too coincidental for the same thing to happen at one place 3 times during a two year period. With your experience are you able to make any suggestions or point me in the right direction or perhaps to someone who might have some ideas on what my problem is please?
I should perhaps say that I have had 5 stool tests done at different labs and all were negative and I have had biopsies for H Pylori which were also negative as well as all the normal GI tests. I would be so grateful for any help as I am desperate.

Hi,
It certainly sounds like you are suffering from some sort of environmental illness (EI).
Typically EI develops over a period of time, with periods of worsening and recovery, before chronic illness sets in - as you describe. It is thought that various environmental stressors such as exposures to chemicals, allergens, moulds/molds, infections build up over our lives until the \"total body load\" is too much and the body ceases to function optimally with symptoms and illness being the result.
The unusual thing in your case is that all your symptoms seem to affect the gastrointestinal system. Typically with EI there are respiratory, neurological/cognitive, fatigue and often mood disorders.
Since the problems started at your friends house which you say is old it could be a mould problem that was the trigger that initially tipped your total body load over the top and caused your symptoms. You may have lower levels of contamination at your own home that can be checked by means of an environmental inspection. Of course this is just a guess. Your friend may have had a new kitchen installed - the cabinets giving off large amounts of formaldehyde.
I would advise you see a doctor that practices environmental medicine who may be able to uncover the underlying causes of your symptoms and treat them accordingly.
To find such a doctor:
US - The American Academy of Environmental Medicine
UK - British Society for Ecological Medicine
Good luck and take care.

Dear Maff,
Thank you so much for your response.
I live in Hertfordshire and of course I am therefore relatively close to London.
As suggested I looked at the website of the British Society for Ecological Medicine in order to find a clinician and found that there are many. I am aware that in any profession there are good and bad practitioners and so of course I am hoping to find the best one for my condition. So may I please ask, using your experience, if you could possibly recommend someone for me please? Mu quality of life at the moment is nil so distance is not a problem as the most important thing is to get better.
I hope you will be able to help.
Regards
Steve

Hi Steve,
Don't mention it. Since you're near London I'd suggest you book an appointment at Biolab (UK). They have a number of doctors working at their clinic and also act as a lab that practitioners around the country use. They have pioneered many tests that have become the norm in functional and environmental medicine and their doctors have published a number of scientific papers.
Their website is www.biolab.co.uk
All the best
