MCS/Celiac Disease Cure???

#1 2 years, 2 months ago
Hi,

I'm new to the site. I want to thank you all who post to the site, your comments are extremely helpful. I needed to connect with others who have MCS, since most of the world doesn't get it.

I've hit a brick wall with finances, since like most of you, I can't work in most offices due to MCS.

I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease a little over a year ago. I've had MCS for most of my life. I thought going on the gluten free diet would correct the MCS, but it hasn't.

I noticed that there are a few success stories from DHEA supplementation, Phospholipid exchange and Glutathione therapy. Is there any of these that seems to help more with someone who has Celiac Disease? I did read a study that found a glutathione deficiency in Celiac patients. I have been taking that supplement, but actually seem to be reacting more to chemicals while taking it? Can you get worse before you get better on this supplement?

Thanks so much!

Hi Lynn,

Welcome to the site. I'm glad you are finding everyone's posts helpful and hopefully we can help you out...

Since celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune condition it causes increases in white blood cells (T-lymphocytes), antibodies to gut mucosal tissue, and immune-signaling chemicals called cytokines. This is purely speculation but MCS itself has been shown to have an immune component while all of this immune activity from CD directly effects brain function (MCS is considered to be primarily due to toxic brain injury). So it is hard to rule out a CD/MCS connection.

I wouldn't give up hope on the gluten-free diet just yet. It can take a relatively long time to recover from MCS even once all contributing factors have been identified and removed. Hang in there!

I can't say if any of the supplements you mention would help more when you have CD. All should be helpful in both conditions however as they all have antioxidant properties and are anti-inflammatory through effects on the immune system.

Anything that raises glutathione can certainly make you worse before it makes you better as glutathione is the major detoxifying chemical produced by the body. If you quickly increase the amount you have it will start mobilising toxins that will make you feel worse both directly and by causing further immune activation. In theory once the bulk of these toxins have been excreted by the body you should then start to feel better.

One not - L-glutathione or 'Reduced Glutathione' is not actually a good way to raise glutathione in the body. PPC (a phospholipid), NAC and SAMe are more effective methods. Liposomal Glutathione is also an option - this is glutathione that has been made fat-soluble making it more absorbable.

Post edited by: Maff, at: 2010/03/09 14:01

I've had MCS since June 29, 1999. In RE to your supplement. Supplements contain much more then what your taking them for. Fillers or additives:woohoo: . Most MCS'ers can not have these. They are probably why you're feeling worse. If I were you I'd STOP taking them NOW!
