#1 2 years ago
Hi All,

I have to have a minor Op.Can anyone offer advice on the best type or what to avoid when you have Chemical Intolerance. Or point me to some info that I can take to the aneasthetist.

Many thanks

Hi Sarah,

I can't speak from experience but I would say you should be relatively safe with a local anaesthetic. The problems generally begin when chemicals flood the brain with regards to MCS.

Ironically I went to a Mexican clinic for alternative treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Candida-related illness etc and had to have a general anaesthetic in order for a shunt to be placed in my chest for IV nutrient administration during my stay. As soon as I got home to the UK I developed MCS. Obviously I can't say for sure the anaesthetic was the trigger that pushed me over the edge into MCS but in my opinion it was the most toxic thing by far I was given during my stay at the clinic.

Have you looked on the MCS America site? They have a number of information sheets for various problems those with MCS face. Not sure if they have one for operations/surgery but worth a look.

Other than that I'm not sure what the best options are, sorry.

I hope you work something out and the operation goes smoothly - in every way.

Take care.

Post edited by: Maff, at: 2010/05/11 15:09

Sarah,

This from Lourdes Salvador of MCS AMerica via our Facebook page:

\"I'd suggest getting a biocompatibility test done and avoiding anything with epinephrine in it. Since I had my biocompatibility testing and insist on no-epi versions, I have had no problems or adverse reactions.\"

I hope I'm not too late with all this!

Let us know how you get on.

I saw a similar post on another forum asking about anaesthetia during surgery for someone with MCS. The reply was to ask for \"preservative and adrenal free anaesthetia\". Makes me wonder what types of preservative are used in the anaesthetia.

Hi Karen,

Thanks for you post. I shall remember to add adrenalin the the preservatives - thanks very much.

Glad your getting on with the mask. Things will get better. It gave me the freedom to go places for a short time I wouldnt normally go. . but couldnt use it for hours as I was too sensitive it really was just a safety mechanism in advance of avoidance. You get all sorts. . .you get laughed at in the street. Little children wave. . .man carry your luggage/shopping. people make carzy signs behind your back. Ive experienced it all! As long as your safe honey . . let the rest of them get on with it!

I can walk to the local shop without mine now. . .well have it in pocket incase of any unforeseen painting/creasoting/road surfacing/bonfires. . ..etc etc .. . .people with too much perfume in the post office queue!!! I couldn't do that a year ago.

take care

sarah
