Hi exxfile,
Very good question. As someone has recovered from severe MCS I would say that having your own home where you can control exactly what you are exposed to not only allows you to live normally but is a vital piece of the puzzle to recovery. The brain in MCS is hypersensitive to VOCs but a prolonged period without exposures gives it chance to essentially "reset" itself to pre-MCS baseline levels of sensitivity. The brain after all is capable of "re-wiring" itself and adapting its functioning as demonstrated by neural plasticity research.
Of course whether you can live a normal life depends on whether you suffer solely from MCS since it is often comorbid with other conditions. I still live a far from normal existence despite overcoming MCS as I also suffer from ME/CFS, adrenal fatigue, gut issues etc. One hurdle at a time!
