Hi Denise,
It's unusual that OLD carpet is giving you problems as the amount of volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) given off should decrease over time. When my MCS was at its worst I actually carpeted my apartment with used carpets and was fine with them.
However, if the carpet is troubling you then the best options for the chemically sensitive are solid hard wood or ceramic tile (NOT laminate or soft wood like pine which give off VOCs!)
A good source for natural wood finishes in the US is Green Nest who also do natural carpets and can provide samples so you can test them. Perhaps these would be ok?
Good luck, I kknow how frustrating it is when not even your own living space is a safe area!

Post edited by: Maff, at: 2009/11/26 22:00

Ah I see....it sounds like you'll definitely have to get rid of it as soon as possible then. But on the plus side it means that natural carpet might be an option. Easier to fit than wood or tile. Perhaps it's worth getting some free samples to see if you can tolerate it.

Hello,
Anyone have any suggestions of natural carpets? I need to get my bedroom done..the older carpet has that stronger fragrance smell and its making me sick all night..when I am sleeping..I wake up sick..
We rent so I would realy want something that doesnt cost to much..
Thanks
Denise

Hi Denise,
Sorry to hear you haven't got this situation sorted out yet. You must have had an awful time!
Take a look at this page created by non-toxic living expert Debra Lynn Dadd. It has a list with quite a few natural carpet suppliers:

Hope you find something suitable.
