Hi Nancy - it's also well worth contacting MCS Referral & Resources as they can put you in touch with an MCS-aware physician in your area. - Maff

Hi Adele,

I think how and why MCS start is still a bit mysterious.

In my case, further investigation, after knowledgeable physician advice, made a strong case of gluten intolerance for me (and I should thanks the physician for the tip, as it was really very far from obvious)

That said, once MCS is started, it can be triggered by all sorts of chemical (that depends of the individual) and it becomes slowly worst and worst over time.

You could try Martin Pall treatment, it does help.

Maybe you can alo try Gluten free diet as well (or a blood test for celiac disease). It can be worth it! But it will be hard, particularly as there are plenty of hidden source of gluten...
Further, if it happens that you have celiac disease, it might be you become intolerant to many other food than gluten. Celiac disease slowly damage the bowels, making it more permissive, making it easy to develop other intolerance... - lloyd

Can MCS be brought on from a memory foam mattress? 4 months ago I bought a memory foam mattress which had a very strong chemical smell. I started with burning swollen eyes, breathing problems, skin rashes and generally feeling very unwell and tired. I got rid of the mattress 6 weeks after having it and whilst my symptoms are no where near as bad I still feel unwell and have skin rashes. I also had blood tests from the doctor for allergies and seem to have picked up sensitivity to nearly everything! However before this mattress I was absolutely fine and I only suffer in the house and mainly upstairs as I have tried to keep the door closed of the offending bedroom. If it is MCS what can I do to cleanse the house and how long will it take? Thanks - Adele Cope

okay - I had a chemical injury and although I do now have asthma related symptoms, I have this smell issue. BIG. And, some things that I smell just gets me itching without much thought. I can identify what I am even smelling. perfume with something that smells like paint thinner. I am being treated as though I am crazy. Oh YES! Anyone take a whiff of that Axe product. Left me feeling drugged for quite a while. - cybersmell

Oops, just read your answer!...
But I have no cough or other symptoms of known disease! (I saw so many doctors).
Anyway
1. I'm about to post in the forum
2. I took some off the shelves nutrient complement with many of the agent advised by Martin Pall and I feel already much better.

Yesterday night I just received my order from Nutricology, thanks to the benefit of the nutrient complement, I'm so excited... - lloyd

Hi Lloyd, it certainly sounds like MCS could be a possibility but without more information it is impossible to say. If your symptoms are mainly respiratory (cough, shortness of breath, tight chest etc) then it could be that you have asthma or another condition triggered by the pollutants in car exhaust. Please post in the multiple chemical sensitivity forums and tell us more about your symptoms and what triggers them, how long they last etc. - Maff

I believe I might have MCS. Although what I have clearly identified as the cause of my problem is car exhaust. Perfume cause me no trouble at all (well I'm not 100% sure, but I have no reason to believe it so). Furthermore painful symptom comes quickly and goes slowly, i.e. 1 evening in the city, will make me tired for 1 week (even though I live in an isolated village because of this very problem).
Does that fit MCS?

Anyway, reading the other links on how to fight back... - Lloyd

I am a 42 year old professional working in higher education. Over the past 3 - 4 years I've been experiencing increasing problems in the office. It started with painful, buring eyes and sinus pressure but has excalated to persistent headaches, nausea, inability to concentrate, inability to recall, swelling painful eyes.... Recently a collegue met with me in my office, freshly splashed with cologne. I was immediate hit with burning skin and eyes and couldn't wait for him to leave. Within an hour I had to leave the office, went home and slept for 2 hours straight.... even though I felt fine before our meeting.

What's next in this seemingly progressive condition? how long will it be before I cannot function well enough and loose my job? How can I make it better without asking the impossible - no one wearing perfume/cologne come near me?

For those who think Multiple Chemical Sensitivity or sensitivity to fragrances is bologny, I challenge you to live in my shoes for a day.

Hi Davis,

Dr. Pall and others have identified a large number of other treatment options (mainly antioxidants) that may help to combat the disease process Pall's work suggests is at play. Take a look at the following article to learn more and for lists of potential treatments: The NO! OH NOO! Theory and Suggestions For Treatment . I should have placed a link from this article...I will do so now!

Also you might want to take a look at Dr. Pall's book which is extremely enligtening: Explaining Unexplained Illnesses: Disease Paradigm for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, Fibromyalgia, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Gulf War Syndrome. - Maff

Other than B-12 shots, does this research give us any treatment options? If so, what are they and how effective are they? - Davis

WOW! As well as read this paper of Dr. Martin Pall's work which I found very interesting indeed I noticed there was no one comment? Why? Maybe it was provided for professional people to address few questions that Dr. Martin asked? If so where are they? Or perhaps all patients suffering from MCS are also welcomed to comment if so why then none of us has commented? I am not an expert and have no medical skills background however I found Dr. Martin Pall’s theory can be very good explanation and start point. :) - Khadija
