I discovered after years of searching for an answer, that sulphites cause my considerable bronchial constriction, making me feel as though I am slowly suffocating. I also get a sharp pain in the chest round the bronchial area ( I suppose it is the pulling of the msucles as I struggle to get a lung full of air for days on end. Does anyone know of any treatment to take for this when it flares up?? I already have asthma medication and it does nothing to help the sulphite reactions. This condition is debilitating; because how can I work when I am struggling not to pass out while talking to clients as I gasp for breath?
Any help is extrenely appreciated, I am at my witts end and so down about this. >:( - Cathrosser

I think my problems are down to sulphites - but wanted to see if anyone had similar problems....I believe sulphites cause my mouth/tongue to swell (although not my throat, so breathing not really an issue), which ultimately causes my tongue/cheeks to swell into my teeth, which cuts my mouth up badly - leaving me with around 5 to 10 mouth ulcers at a time....the whole mouth remains swollen for about 12-15 days.....very painful to talk and eat. I am asthmatic......Anyone else with a similar experience to this? - PaulG76

Thanks for writing about your experience Mike it must have been very frightening at the time. Sulphites are an important issue that a lot of people are unaware of. I particularly wanted to reply to your post because studies have shown vitamin C protects against asthma by acting as an antioxidant and improving the health of the airways. Fruit juices can be a good source of vitamin C and thus good for asthma but, as you discovered....only if they are free from sulphites! As a side note it is always better to eat the whole fruit as this provides more nutrients, particularly fibre, and less sugar. - Maff

I have had asthma all my life (I am 57 years old) and was not aware of any food or drink specific allergies until recently
My asthma changes with the weather more than anything especially being agravated by cold damp rainy weather
Two days ago I bought some orange lemon and pineapple squash which I noted later contained sulphites
I took a drink and almost immediately had an allergic attack
My lungs simply stopped working I couldn`t breath in or out and my Ventolin of course didn`t help as I could not inhale the dose released
I went outside into the cold and dry air and started thumping my lungs with my fists
After approx a minute maybe more my lungs started to work again and I then did deep breathing exercises for the next thirty minutes until my lungs were working normally again (for me)
I canot attribute the asthmatic attack to anything other than the fruit squash as there were no unusual symptoms before consuming the drink and the reaction occurred immediately upon taking a drink and possibly inhaling any gases released by the squash
I`m not blaming anyone, the label does bear a warning memo
I am simply informing you in the hope that reporting my problem may assist others

The same thing has been happening to me on and off for the last couple of years. My Mom is allergic to gluten and has Celiac disease, so I just figured I was going to develop the same thing. Then as my symptoms started getting worse, I started paying attention to what I was consuming on a daily basis. It got to the point where I started getting hives all over my body on a daily basis, my lips and or eyes would swell to tripple their size for hours on end, and my throat would constrict and get this annoying dry cough. Sure enough, if I had ANYTHING containing sulfites, my lips would swell and I would break out in hives or have itchy hands and feet almost immediately. I also pay attention to all labels now. In addition to avoiding harmful foods, I've started supplementing with Quecertin & Bromelain daily. And I've also started taking the mineral Molybdenum. Some people's sulfite sensitivity is due to a Molydbenum deficiency. It would be wise to have a (hair) strand test before making a self-diagnosis though. Hope this can help someone. - Jessica K

It took me ten years to discover why sometimes I would have sudden violent attacks of abdomenal pain and explosive diarrhea after ingesting food . Where I ate, whether in restaurants, dinners at friends' homes, or social events where food was served did not seem to matter. The attack would occur minutes after eating and was a great source of embarrassment to me many times. I was apprehensive about ingesting any foods outside of my own home. People told me this problem was just "something I ate". Then I read that sulfites caused many people problems, but never mentioned the symptoms I had. I took it upon myself to moniter where I had eaten and what I had eaten and to investigate if sulfites were the problem. Sure enough all investigation pointed to a possible sulfite allery . I began to carefully monitor my food intake. When I eat out I make sure that there is no wine in the preparation of food I order and on buying ANY food in the grocery store, canned or frozen or dried, I read all labels. It is surprising how many products use sulfites as a preservative. Some products, as example, canned tuna, processed by different companies, will have sulfites in one and not in the other. Even snacks such as those small packets of cheese and peanut butter crackers made by different companies will have sulfites in one and not in the other. I have learned by experience, some pretty embarrassing, to read EVERY label,to ask friends what is in the food they serve, and to be very picky when out at social events. If I have any doubts I do without! I often wonder how many people suffer from these sudden attacks of abdomenal pain and explosive diarrhea which can be disasterous and only think "it was something I ate" without knowing the real culprit is sulfites and how easy it is to eliminate these attacks like I have. I hope my story will help those people - Audrey Powell
