A great book from an amazing researcher and true doctor that has our best interests at heart. Thank you.

If you are small business owner or have a high demand job and over 35 yrs old, get your thyroid checked. And don't always go along what your doctor says if you have it to take the medical, read this book and give it to your doctor before going on a T4 medication, this book will make it a lot easier understanding the facts about hypothroidism. Thanks Matt for putting this review up, people need to buy this book, it can change your life for the better knowing more about your thyroid, thanks.

It helped bring me back from the brink when I had lost all hope.

Prior to reading this book I had been given 4 different antidepressants by my doctor and just told to do some exercise and have a regular routine. If I could have done that I wouldn't have had a problem would I!

After reading this book I got myself a 10,000 lux light box (a proven therapy) and used the excellent recipe suggestions to change my diet to a more mood enhancing one.

I have used other techniques described by Dr. Rosenthal in this book to good effect also but won't go into every detail. It's not an expensive book so if you are struggling with SAD use whatever energy you have to buy it and read it. It will change your life.

I have to say overall I am very disappointed with Gut Reaction. The emphasis on getting back to basics by urging readers to chew food properly and eat in a relaxed environment, amongst other things, is commendable. As is the fact the author prefers not to rely on nutritional supplements.

However, everything is covered very quickly and in very little detail. The role of digestion and diet in health is given a brief summary before tips such as those for improving eating habits are described. The author then provides tailored dietary plans for a host of illnesses with little discussion of rationale before skimming over nutrients, nutritional supplements and a few other topics at the end of the book.

The credibility of some of the recommendations is also questionable, particularly with regard to pH balancing. It is said that drinking lemon and olive oil "counteract[s] acidity in the stomach, making the system more alkaline, and clears undigested food particles." For starters lemon juice itself is acidic and only has an alkalizing effect on the body once it is absorbed and metabolised. Secondly, I'm unsure why anyone would want to counteract acidity in the stomach - it is acidic for a reason which is because it needs to be to properly digest protein. Partially digested proteins increase the risk of food allergy and intolerance, as well as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

This aside, the bulk of the tips for healthy eating habits are useful and the lay reader new to the subject of nutrition may find this book a good read. For those looking for something a little more in depth and scientifically sound I would recommend Digestive Wellness by Lipski or Optimum Digestion by Nichols and Faass (eds).

This is a controversial area however as most mainstream doctors refuse to acknowledge the role of the thyroid in these conditions. The confusion is mostly a result of the standard thyroid blood tests which a growing number of doctors feel are inadequate and don't show a problem even when the patient is showing all the symptoms of low thyroid function and may respond to a trial of treatment.

Dr. Burrant-Peatfield became disenchanted with general practice in the UK as he found he was unable to help a growing number of patients by following standard practices. He went into private practice and began to specialize in diagnosing and treating thyroid and adrenal problems. This is the second edition of his comprehensive guide to these problems.

This is a great book for anybody suffering from CFS or fibromyalgia, as well as those suffering from unexplained tiredness, stress and depressed mood. The book covers the thyroid in detail, discussing the various thyroid hormones, the nutrients needed for their production, and the symptoms of thyroid hormone deficiency. Dr. Durrant-Peatfield then explains the issues surrounding testing in detail, educating the reader about how to make sure they get the correct testing from their doctor. The final section looks at holistic treatment of thyroid problems.

The book also looks at deficiency of adrenal hormones such as DHEA and cortisol and how adrenal dysfunction is connected to dysfunction of the thyroid. The book explains that these two glands work as a team so when things go wrong attention needs to be paid to both in order for the patient to be treated successfully.

This is a fantastic book that I would highly recommend to anyone who thinks their health problems are related to the thyroid (and adrenal glands). Armed with this reference you will be able to request the appropriate testing and take effective action to improve your health.

It turned out to be an absolute gem and I now consider it on of the best books I have read on the overall causes and effects of Environmental Illness.

Dr. Matsen graduated from Bastyr University, one of only a handful of fully licensed naturopathic medical schools in North America, over 20 years ago and has been in private practice ever since.

In this, his second book, Dr. Matsen embarks on a quest to educate the reader on the great importance of the liver for overall health. We learn of the factors, both from the environment, and within the body itself, that contribute to putting a strain on the liver's detoxifying capacity, and how an overburdened liver can have consequences for every system in the body, creating a host of symptoms.

What makes this book unique, and in my opinion highly appealing and entertaining, is the way in which Dr. Matsen chose to present often very complex medical information, in a highly readable format that makes it accessible to a much wider audience. The information is presented by 9 fictional characters, collectively called "Liver Dwarves". Each chapter is presented by a different liver dwarf who is responsible for a certain body system. For example, Burpy teaches us about digestion, Spacey discusses the brain, and we learn about the immune system from Achey. Each liver dwarf talks about a specific body system in terms of its relationship to the liver.

I have read a few reviews elsewhere that have suggested that the book is silly and unreadable. I could not agree more with this. With respect to the subject matter, Dr. Matsen could have written a book that read like a textbook and nobody would have wanted to make the ffort to get through it. The unique format of this book in my opinion makes it a very entertaining read and makes it easier to understand and assimilate the wealth of important information it contains.

The Secrets to Great Health covers everything from gut dysbiosis and leaky gut syndrome to chemical sensitivities and allergies. The final liver dwarf, Docque, presents the author's solutions to chronic illnesses which he uses in his clinic. The book includes a large section on nutritional approaches to treatment and also prvdeslots of great recipes.

This is an extremely well researched book that now has a bonus section containing almost 600 research abstracts from the most important scientific studies in natural health over the past 100 years. This addition is a fantastic reference for both natural health professionals and the layman.

I can't recommend this title highly enough for anyone who wants to learn about the real causes of the whole range of chronic health problems based on a huge base of research.
