Hi, my daughter is constantly being misdiagnosed........ I have been researching her symptoms and think she is suffering from some type of Candida; not just the usual Thrush which appears to be common, its quite severe affecting her mental state too.  I can now approach our G.P to discuss further. My question is "is anyone aware of whether it would affect her menstrual cycle; because hers has stopped? and I am unable to clarify this anywhere....

Any help will be great

Sue

Hi Sue,

Intestinal overgrowth of Candida commonly affects the mental state of sufferers since the toxins this yeast produces include many that affect the brain, primarily ethanol (drinking alcohol) and acetaldehyde.

The whole subject of Candida related illness is controversial which means there has been very little research into its effects. However, if one accepts Candida can overgrow and become pathogenic in the intestines then it is only logical it would produce toxins by fermenting the carbohydrates the sufferer eats and these toxins could affect every system in the body (immune, nervous, endocrine etc).

As far back as the 1980s a number of doctors (who have become famously associated with Candida and yeast related illness) were reporting that problems with the menstrual cycle were common in Candida sufferers...including periods stopping altogether.

Their books may be of interest to you (you can pick them up VERY cheaply):

The Yeast Connection: A Medical Breakthrough by William G. Crook, M.D.

The Yeast Syndrome by John Parks Trowbridge, M.D. and Morton Walker, D.P.M.

Unfortunately most doctors are not very open to the idea of Candida causing anything more than thrush or fungal nail and ski infections except in the those with severely deficient immunity (e.g. AIDS, Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy). If you are in the UK I would recommend you visit the National Candida Society for a list of doctors who treat this illness.

Best wishes to you and your daughter.
