Urgent Health Issues Regarding Invisalign Braces

Invisalign:  A Near Death Experience

I would like to tell my story of a near fatal experience wearing Invisalign braces. I was 54 years old at the time, and have always been active and in great shape. I didn't even take any medication, except, Estrogen.   I am, overly sensitive to chemicals and medications.  I might be one in a million to have such a sever reaction, but even if I help one other person I will feel good.

My dentist said that it would take two years with Invisalign because my teeth were so crooked.  I started with them in November of 2007.  My dentist was proud of me because he knew I was very disciplined and kept them in the required time.  He said most people cheated and didn't wear them as many hours as suggested.

In early 2008 I started feeling poorly, tired, and achy.  I went to a Rheumatologist, because I thought I had Fibromyalgia, I knew my mom had it.  I was given blood tests and it was found that I had a slight hypothyroid condition.  That doctor sent me to an Endocrinologist.  I could not tolerate any of the medication that he gave me.  He said that I was a very interesting patient because my Thyroid levels kept going up and down.

He sent me back to the Rheumatologist to see if maybe I had an autoimmune problem.  I took more extensive blood tests.  Nothing conclusive was discovered.

Meanwhile, I was getting worse.  I could barely get around. I was weak and so tender and achy; I had to get up from sitting very slowly.  My hair was falling out at an alarming rate, and was dull and straight.  My eyebrows were also falling out.  My vision was changing, my fingernails developed ridges and were curling up. I was unable to tolerate the heat. I had several acute spells where I literally thought I was going to die.  It felt as though my life force was completely draining out of me.

By April of 2009 I had completely baffled the doctors.  In early October of 2009, I was so scared.   I was also having issues with my indigestion.  Burping all the time, gas and a sever pain in my stomach. Also, at times my throat would feel like it was closing and I completely lost my appetite.

I decided to go to a gastrointestinal specialist.  He ordered an Endoscopy and Colonoscopy test, which I done the first part of November 2009. The results were negative.

I was finally finished with the braces the last week of October 2009.

Only two weeks after finishing with the braces, I started to feel better.  By the third week in November, my hair was shiny and back to normal, I had energy, my stomach issues disappeared.  My nails were growing faster and looked normal.  I joined a gym, and in a couple of weeks I felt about 10 years younger. I was suddenly feeling better than I had before the Invisalign.

I was disappointed that no one could figure out what was wrong with me.  I started thinking what changed in my life in the last two years.  INVISALIGN !!!!  I started researching and found that some people had low levels of a toxic reaction.  I knew I was on the right track.  I found that some types of polyurethane contain cyanide, and when it breaks down the chemical composition changes.

It has been suggested that all dentists do a blood test to determine if the patient has a problem with plastics in dental appliances.  All the people who care about me say I should sue the makers of the product, but all I really want to do is to make people aware, and try and get some kind of sensitivity test for all patients considering all types of dental appliances.

Thanks for your time, please tell anyone you know about this issue.

Hi jollieplace,

Welcome to the site and thank you for sharing your experience with invisalign in such detail. I am so relieved for you that your ill-health reversed so quickly after you finished using the braces - I fear others might not recover so quickly.

We actually had another member post in the forums about worsening of her chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) after using Invisalign. The thread can be found here.

Thank you again for sharing. I have no doubt your post will help a great many people avoid the dangers posed by invisalign. I myself want to have my teeth straightened as they became crooked after my wisdom teeth came through. I think I will go for regular braces - I wore a mask whenever anybody saw me for 4 years due to MCS so I should be able to handle a mouth full of metal for 18 months or so smilies/wink.gif

Enjoy your renewed health and fitness! smilies/smiley.gif

I have almost the same symptoms as jollieplace...I finished my treatment about a month ago but was still wearing the plastic retainer until about 4 days ago...hard to tell if I am feeling better yet but will leave out the retainer until I can prove it out either way.

I am a runner and until now thought that I had just exhausted myself for the past 8-9 months..Doctor could not help me...told me to take it easy and watch my diet..I have tried everything but taking this plastic out of my mouth..thank you for the post...martin.

That's a bit scary, as I'd never heard anything about this before. I got my Invisalign braces through an [http://www.jollyvilledental.com]Austin dentist[/http://www.jollyvilledental.com] and didn't have any problems. In fact, I had pretty good results. Thanks for sharing your story - I'm glad everything turned out okay.

Hi, thanks for sharing. I have had health issues for over ten years now and all sorts of problems with my teeth. There were several factors, one was sensitivity to mercury. Finally after much work to sort out my health I am ready for a brace as my teeth moved around due to six dropping out when my problems were at their worst. My dentist has ordered me an elgiloy metal brace, which, after telling him I was nickel sensitive (certain metals cause a severe reaction) he assured me had no nickel. I found our elgiloy is an alloy of nickel, chromium, cobalt and molybenum, which, the first three together, is particularly toxic. Another orthodontist has said I may be able to use invislign, though my first dentist says it won't work for me.
The Damon method uses ceramic and stainless steel, though a rather sneery orthodontist said even that would contain nickel in the wire. I am trying to move thorugh this maze of choices, complicated by people who consider themselves authorities and me a bit of an idiot with silly issues, so it's not great fun! Anyway my brace will be made next month so I need to decide which is the best method for me, the least toxic.
Any opinions? Daunted, Gabrielle.

Hello Jollie pLace and thank you for sharing your experience. I have great reservations regarding Invisalign. I for one is reacting to the plastic, it makes me cough, a terrible cough for which I was prescribed two courses of antibiotics at the beginning of the treatment, until I realized that the coughing was much worse each time I started using a new set of trays. (Invisalign and my dentist claimed they had never heard any complaints before – which I doubt very much). I searched on the Net for a solution and found that soaking the trays in 50/50 vinegar/water solution for 30 minutes would remove some of the coating and help (therefore someone had problems before). That's what I have been doing and it does help but still leaves me with a nagging tickle in my throat. It's obvious to me that the plastic in Invisalign releases harmful chemicals that INVISALIGN, the FDA or other health organizations should investigate and monitor closely. Perhaps, sensitive people react immediately but all ingest harmful chemicals that may show up later on in one form of illness or another. Furthermore, in my opinion, Invisalign should not be used for children - it's too invasive, too much filing. I find it disconcerting that professionals providing dental care can actually joyfully do so much filing to teeth. They claimed the enamel is thick enough to allow such brutal filing - maybe it's OK for older people, but not for young children who will need their teeth for the rest of their lives. So, quite frankly, I could not in all good faith recommend Invisalign until this company and the orthodontists and dentists are ready to assess health risks with proper tests.

Hi everyone my daughter who is 26 has had her invilalign braces for over 12 months now and has had hayfever like symnptoms since the start inclulding hives, swollen face blistered gums and sinus infection..I thought it was the braces for a while but the doctors and her own dentist looked at us as if we were a bit silly. The dentist even refusing to remove the braces without a doctors certificate and a blood test saying that it is the braces. You can imagine how upset this made her as it is surely her decision and her money all paid up front.. It has made it almost impossible for her to continue her business and is always missing meetings etc as she is sick. As she is almost through her treatment it is impossible to understand the dentists reaction so she must suffer another three weeks on very strong, Prednisone, antibotics and pain killers..We are at a loss at the lack of support from the medical profession and invisalign. I just numbs the mind...

Hi. I was so excited to hear about the "clear aligner system" (which is what I knew it as in UK) because I'm 44 and traditional braces would look silly on me. So I paid up front, got the kit and went off chuffed as cheese. After only a couple of days my tongue and throat were burning so badly and I felt horribly ill, tired and had a throbbing headache. I suspected it may have been the aligners because I'm in peak health and apart from being super sensitive to chemicals in face creams etc, I have no other issues. So I kept the aligners out for a couple of days and the symptoms seemed to subside. Desperate for the system to work for me (because I really do want straight teeth) I tried them again. Second time around it was even worse! My throat was burning so badly and all the other symptoms rushed back after just a couple of hours of having them in. It's obvious to me the toxicity level must have risen sharply in my body and the second round just tipped the scale. I think they are super unhealthy. Other people may not realise it because they are not as sensitive, but I still think it must be having a harmful effect.

Thank you Jollyplade for taking your time to document your experience. My 17 year old daughter is using the Invisaline system and is almost finished. She has been loosing weight the entire time she has been on them, with an inability to absorb what she eats , (symptoms similar to Marasmus - muscle wasteing). She has always been sensitive to chemicals, medicines and plastics. Although she was finished with the invisalines recently, they said they needed to do some last tweeks with her teeth, I was thinking it would just be a set or two more of the invisalines (they sent 6). She has been wearing them from 6/22/10 - 7/24/11 (today) faithfully.
But it has been very hard to watch a perfectly healthy girl (so strong, she shoots baskets from the equivalent of 1/2 court at home) get weaker and weaker to the point she is now 110 from a healthy 145 (heavy bones and heavey muscled) with no muscle tissue on her upper arms or upper thigh area and skin so dry and sallow you'd swear it was skin from someone who was very, very old. My husband and I thought it was the braces, everyone told us "NO, Its not the braces". What do you wear for retainers? Or do you wear regular retainers? I think it will be good for us to quit now! We may have the Dr. make us regular retainers to hold her teeth where they are, but if she doesn't get any better, we will just let her have slightly crooked teeth. They weren't really that bad to begin with.

I have been using invisilign since August of last year. I am going to say since November of last year I have had stomach problems. I am now on prilosec and sometimes I still have very bad pains. I never had problems with my stomach before and was wondering if it had to do with the invisilign braces.

I developed a bad case of fatigue while using this product. There should be a way to get the money back in these types of cases. Would this be similar to medical malpractice? Even if not, we should be able to bring a class action lawsuit. Do you agree?

I never had a sinus infection in my life and now I've had constant sinus infections since starting Clear Correct (an Invisalign competitor). ABeen more than a year now. Allergist finds nothing I'm allergic to. ENT just keeps giving me different antibiotics.

I am in the last thried of my invisalign treatment and have seen great results thus far - however I too experienced some weird side effects- I have basically had 4 months of sinus issues, I didn't realise it was the invisalign until I pondered back on what had changed and I had mentioned to my dentist that when I had a neck massage two of my teeth throbbed and that I suspected I may have had holes in them , he said oh no that's your sinuses and then it clicked to me. The past two months have been fine, though I think that may be due to the fact that I am a bit 'slacker' with how many hrs I wear them per day. I was always quite concerned about having plastic in my body 24hrs a day - clearly not natural!! Perhaps moving your natural teeth line changes all the inner parts of your face ie sinus space etc??????

Ok people Invisaligns can permanently damage your organs and should not ever be worn by anyone, especially children. Please see the following link for my story and other "nightmares" associated with wearing these braces made of Number 1 plastic....these are DANGEROUS!!!!

Hello, This message is for all and especially Jollie. I have been wearing invisalign for two months now. Before invisalign I was full of energy, had a full head of soft hair. I have noticed after 2 months now, I am extremely tired all the time, lots of fatigue. Also the scariest part is that I have noticed my hair getting brittle, dry and thin in some areas. I know that as men age they start losing some hair but not this quickly. I really feel that as soon as I started wearing the invisalign this started happening. I have a very healthy diet and eat very nutritious food and take lots of vitamins. I am getting really worried and am considering discontinuing the invisalign treatment. Jollie, can you tell me if you started feeling better and noticed your hair go back to normal after the treatment was over?? And what I should expect?

I have been wearing Invisalign Braces since August 2012 with nagging sinus issues. In Jan. 2013, I was given a new set of 7 aligners. My reaction was almost immedaite and fatal. I woke up in the middle of the night gasping for air. I was choking and could not catch my breath. I have seen multiple specialists, and am currently being treated for a severe sinus infection and stomach upset. My symtoms are consistent with other symptoms being reported by everyone in this forum. I am so scared. I do not know what to do.

Hooray for this blog. I wore Invisalign for over a year, during which my hair did become very thin, fell out in gobs, had a rapid heart beat constantly and lost energy. I am 68 and was never counseled by my dentist on any side effects relating to this product. Since that was the case, I thought my maladies were being caused by too much flouride from brushing my teeth more, or maybe I had developed an allergic reaction to nuts or some foods, perhaps I was taking an herb or vitamin and was getting allergic to that, etc. I kept eliminating everything from my daily life over the entire year. Nothing affected my maladies. Then I thought about when all of this started and realized it was a few weeks after wearing the aligners. I decided to test that theory. I did not wear the aligners and symtoms began to recede. My heart began to beat normally and it didn't feel like it was going to explode from my chest. I later called a prior dentist in another state and he told me that he has had many people who have had similar reactions to Invisalign. Also, because of my age, it probably increased the severity of the maladies, along with the fact that my teeth movement, at my age, could also be a factor. I believe that any new technology which comes along should be tested more vigorously. I am a Naturapath, Holistic and have always been extremely healthy. There was no other reason for what happened and I advise others to be extremely vigilant on this product.

The exact same thing happened to my mom. invisaline braces TOXIC!. My mom slowly started feeling sick, lethargic, tired it then progressed to extreme difficulty speaking anf then beyond to foot dropping arm,leg cramps and inability to walk. This took place from October 2012 through march 2013. After consultations with a neurologist at MCV in Richmond and extensive blood work and and EMG it was disconvered there is permanent nerve damage around her mouth. The oly explanation was the invisalign braces were TOXIC. The neurologists is presenting it to a conference this week. After one week, there is been a dramatic improvement afte stopping the braces but still extreme symptoms.

Prior to using Invisalign I was a perfect picture of health, mind and body. I worked out several times a week and was a competitive triathlete. My career was taking off and I was looking at senior management. I was making tons of money so I thought that I would pay cash for this treatment and straighten out a few mildly crooked teeth. I began having anxiety problems and was exhausted all of the time. I decreased my workout load, messed with my diet and this didn't work. I saw my physician who said that I was suffering from anxiety and put me on medication. I began having stomach problems, anxiety, insomnia and major mood swings. WTF! A few months ago I didn't have any of these problems. This went on for about 2 years. Recently, I went on a two week business trip and I forgot my Invisalign. After a few days my stomach problems started to improve, I slept through the night and I was feeling at ease. After a few more days my energy levels were improving, I was sleeping through the night and my anxiety was gone. I sit here today with absolutely none of the problems that I have been suffering from over the past two years. I have no proof that Invisalign caused these problems, but once I stopped using them, I have had no physical or mental problems. Cheers!

I started using invisalign about 12 weeks ago and started getting eye pain, thought it to be just another pain one gets from time to time. my eyes continue to get worse and are sore and red. The eye doctors have run numerous tests and can find nothing, they call it ideopathic......no reason for it.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar??

John
