The Wonders of High Dose Vitamin D for SAD
I wanted to share with you my experience using high dose vitamin D to treat my SAD.
For a number of years I was literally bed-bound in the winter months, unable to do much of anything for myself, just stubbornly clinging to life despite overwhelming feelings of despair and worthlessness and fending off the constant suicidal thoughts. I had tried bright light therapy, medications and other nutrient and herbal supplements without success. Then I read a study showing high doses of vitamin D were highly effective at alleviating the symptoms of SAD, at least as effective as bright light therapy. I obtained vitamin D3 powder from my doctor (it must be the bioavailable D3 form) and was instructed to take 25,000-50,000IU once per week. Well, I took 25,000IU and the effect was huge and very rapid in taking effect. It was the middle of january and my mood was nearing its lowest but within 30 minutes of taking the vitamin D3 I felt as if I would in summer. The dark clouds lifted from my mind and I began feeling happy and content. Although the effects started to fade after 3-4 days, I overcame this by splitting the dose and taking it daily instead.
Has anyone else had such impressive results using vitamin D3?
Great to hear you have had some very good results with vitamin D3. You described the feeling it can give you really well when you said "For the first time in a long time I felt good when I woke up, like something positive was on the horizon."
Epsom salts might be complimentary as vitamin D can be activating (potentially making you restless - while raising your mood) and on the other hand magnesium has a calming effect on the brain and central nervous system (CNS). They would balance each other in this way. Of course both vitamin D and magnesium are also both important for bone health.
I have seen research showing that the Sulhpur in epsom salts IS absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. It could be that the bad reactions to sulphur-containing substances in the past have been due to them being taken orally...so a reaction in the gut or during liver methabolism perhaps.
Anyway, lovely to hear another positive experience with vitamin D for SAD and keep enjoying those epsom salt baths!
I did end up realizing that the occasional Epsom salt bath was very complimentary but only in retrospect. I hadn't had an Epsom salt bath for so very long and after I initiated the vitamin D3, I began to crave one. It was only after reading a post on this site, can't remember which one, that I realized it must have been an actual physical need for the magnesium. Epsom salt is actually magnesium sulfate.
I am highly sensitive/allergic to sulfa drugs and any product with "sulf... anything" in it, but not so with the Epsom salts. As confusing as this is for my brain, I'm very relieved.
Having said all that, I think I'll go have soak.
