Immune Punch (Madre Labs)

Immune Punch by Madre Labs is a high quality, science-based nutritonal supplement designed to support the body's immune system. It is based on a blend of six certified organic medicinal mushroom extracts - Shiitake, Maitake, Reishi, Himematsutake, Turkey Tail and Chaga. Studies have shown these mushrooms, used in traditional Eastern medicine, can support natural killer (NK) cell, T-lymphocyte, and macrophage activity, as well as promoting cytokine production. Much of these benefits have been attributed to Active Hexose Correlated Compound (AHCC) and beta-glucan content of the mushrooms. Immune Punch contains additional AHCC.

Immune Punch also contains EpiCor - a complex, nutrient-rich ingredient comprised of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants. According to the manufacturer, EpiCor "does not stimulate or "boost" the body's immune system; it balances it. EpiCor works in a unique way to;"educate" the immune system so that it works efficiently to provide the proper immune response at the right time.* A balanced immune system makes the appropriate response at the right time. Too great an immune response can lead to allergies or inflammation. Alternatively, an immune system that is suppressed is not working optimally; and this increases the chances that the body will succumb to infection, resulting in sickness."

Finally, Immune Punch also contains a blend of superfood berries chosen for their high antioxidant content. Antioxidants neutralise damaging reactive oxygen species (ROS), or 'free radicals', preventing tissue damage and reducing the burden on the immune system, while also protecting immune cells themselves.

In conclusion, Madre Lab's Immune Punch is a comprehensive solution for those wishing to support immunity naturally.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) was discovered in 1950, and although technically an amino acid, it is rarely referred to as such in scientific and medical literature because it is not incorporated into proteins by the body.

GABA is closely related chemically to glutamic acid. While both act as neurotransmitters in the brain and central nervous system, they have generally opposing effects. Glutamic acid, in the form of glutamate, is excitatory, while GABA has predominantly inhibitory effects.

In fact, GABA is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the human central nervous system. As such, it acts to reduce the excitability of neurons, preventing overstimulation and excitotoxicity, and protecting neurons from associated injury. Benzodiazepine drugs such as diazepam (Valium) act on GABA receptors to produce their tranquilizing effects.

Given the above it is unsurprising that abnormally low levels of GABA are associated with neurological and mood disorders including epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders.

Liposomal Glutathione

Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of the amino acids cysteine, glycine and glutamic acid, which is produced within the body. Glutathione is a potent antioxidant and binds to (conjugates) and removes toxins, including heavy metals, from the body.

Without adequate amounts of glutathione the body is susceptible to damage and dysfunction caused by toxins and free radicals. Low glutathione levels have been found in numerous studies in people with environmental illnesses including chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), fibromyalgia, multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), and autism.

Unfortunately glutathione is destroyed during the digestive process if taken orally so the only way to get glutathione into the blood and cells where it is needed has been by cumbersome methods such as intravenous infusion, transdermal patches, and nasal sprays available only from compounding pharmacies. Recently liposomal, or lipoceutical, glutathione has been developed which may provide a means to deliver absorbable glutathione in an oral form.

In liposomal glutathione, the glutathione molecules are encapsulated in nanosize spheres of fatty substances such as phospholipids, referred to as liposomes. These liposomes are highly absorbable via the body's fat absorption mechanisms in the small intestine. As they are absorbed the liposomes take the glutathione with them and this is released within the body - so in theory this delivery method greatly enhances the amount of glutathione that reaches the bloodstream and the cells, compared to other oral glutathione preparations.

Guaifenesin (Fibromyalgia Treatment)

Guaifenesin is a uricosuric which means it promotes the excretion of uric acid from the body. Due to this action it has been used in the treatment of gout and is also a common ingredient in cough and cold medicines as it helps to clear mucous.

In recent years guaifenesin has found a new use as a treatment for fibromyalgia thanks to the work of Dr. St. Amand. He discovered by accident that Guaifenesin was helping his fibromyalgia patients but now recommends it as a first line treatment for the painful and debilitating condition.

Dr. St. Amand believes that fibromyalgia is the result of an inherited biochemical abnormality resulting in poor excretion of phosphate and oxalate. Treatment with guaifenesin appears to increase the excretion of these substances from the body in the urine. This discovery led Dr. St. Amand to theorize that fibromyalgia sufferers fail to process these substances correctly so that they build up in the tissues. According to Dr. St. Amand, the symptoms of fibromyalgia are a result of the this accumulation of phosphate and oxalate within the body. This leads to impairment of energy production within the mitochondria and may also directly cause the pain and stiffness in the muscles and soft tissue experienced in the illness.

Further research is needed to determine if these theories are correct but it does seem that guaifenesin is of benefit to many fibromyalgia patients.

Guaifenesin is available as a nutritional supplement either alone or in combination with other ingredients thought to be of benefit in fibromyalgia. It may also be of benefit to those with chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), particularly where pain and tenderness is a major concern.

Lactoferrin

Lactoferrin is a glycoprotein and a component of colostrum and whey protein. One of the main jobs of lactoferrin is to bind to iron (which it does strongly) and carry it across the gut wall into the body.

As a nutritional supplement lactoferrin is predominantly used as an immune system booster and to improve gastrointestinal health.

Immune system - Digestion of lactoferrin liberates the immune supporting peptide lactoferricin B. This peptide stimulates the general humoral immune response, promotes the production and action of specific antibodies, and modulates the production of lymphokines. Studies in animals have also found that lactoferrin protected them from the lethal effects of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a powerful endotoxin produced by gram-negative bacteria whose effects are even more severe when a leaky gut is present. Lactoferrin is also known to be a powerful antimicrobial in its own right. It effectively protects against a range of viruses and also has potent antimicrobual action against bacteria (including E.coli) and fungi/yeast such as Candida species.

Digestive Health - The gut is the entry point for a large number of potential pathogens into the body. Lactoferrin promotes the production of secretory IgA antibodies in the gut and also defends the body through its direct antimicrobial actions, preventing the overgrowth of Candida, bacteria and parasites. By binding iron it also prevents these potential pathogens utilising the mineral for their own growth. Lactoferrin also benefits digestive health by promoting the growth of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, the friendly probiotic bacteria.
