The Lightning Process was developed by Phil Parker who graduated from the British School of Osteopathy in the late 1980s and has since developed an international reputation as one of the foremost osteopaths, hypnotherapists, master practioners of Neurolinguistic programming (NLP), and healers.

It is made clear that the Lightning Process is not a therapy because the patient/client has to actively participate in the process for it to be effective. The official Lightning Process website describes it as a "training program that combines concepts from NLP, Hypnotherapy, Life Coaching and Osteopathy." Clients are provided with step by step training from a qualified Lightning Process instructor in how the process works and are then supported as they learn to apply it in their everyday lives to help with specific health conditions or simply to improve confidence or other factors they deem to be holding them back somehow.

The Lightning Process involves a 3 day training program aimed at getting mind and body to work in harmony to enhance health and well-being. This training is split into two main sections. From the Oficial website:

The curriculum of the seminars focuses on two main phases:

1. Discovery

2. Change

Phase one- Discovery: Training modules

1. Beliefs: Discovering the positive and negative power of beliefs on our health and life.

2. Influence :

a. Discovering which areas of our health and life we feel we can influence, and which areas we feel we have no say in.

b. Discovering if there are new ways to approach these issues which give us more choice and more influence over our well being and future.

3. Inner dialogue: Discovering how much of our inner dialogue is useful and how much is destructive and limits our health and future.

4. Body Posture: Discovering how the way we use our bodies and carry ourselves influences how our body works and how we feel.

5. Expectations alter physiology : Discovering how much we create valuable or destructive expectations about what’s about to happen next which directly prepare our body physically for those imagined events.

6. Responsibility and blame : Distinguishing the difference between being responsible for your health and well being and feeling as if you are to blame for it.

Phase two- Change: Training modules

  • How to change any of the above that are keeping you stuck.
  • How to make complicated things simple.
  • How to dramatically change our perspective and focus when we need to.

The Lightning Process is perhaps most well known for its use in treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome(CFS)/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.) but has also been applied to many other conditions.

According to creator Gray Craig: "Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is an emotional, needle free version of acupuncture that is based on new discoveries regarding the connection between your body's subtle energies, your emotions, and your health. EFT has been reported successful in thousands of cases covering a huge range of emotional, health and performance issues. It often works where nothing else will."

EFT combines two well studied approaches to produce a new approach to the treatment of illness:

  1. Mind-Body Medicine - therapies based on the knowledge that thoughts and emotions can affect physical health, and vice versa.
  2. Acupuncture/Acupressure - based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) philosophies that incorporate the idea that the body has its own energy system that flows along meridians. Disease is said to result from disturbances in the flow of energy and therapies such as acupuncture aim to restore it, returning the body to health.

The theory behind the Emotional Freedom Techniques is that negative emotions are caused by disturbances in the body's energy field and that tapping on specific points on the meridians while thinking of a negative emotion provides a powerful method for restoring it to "balance" and treating any symptoms or illness associated with such disturbances.

The basic EFT technique involves holding a disturbing memory or emotion in mind and simultaneously using the fingers to tap on a series of 12 specific points on the body that correspond to meridians used in Chinese medicine. While those sceptical of the approach state that any success is based purely on the resolution of negative emotional states as might be achieved through traditional psychotherapy or counselling, proponents of EFT propose that it is the simultaneous correction of energy imbalances through tapping the energy meridians that makes it effective.

EFT is used to treat a variety of conditions, most commonly of a psychological nature such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), general stress, addictions and phobias. Research published in peer-reviewed medical journals has found it to be effective for phobias and PTSD. Numerous testimonials on the web and in the printed media also atest to the effectiveness of EFT in a wide range of conditions, both psychological and physical in nature.

EFT is becoming particularly popular in the treatment of chronic conditions for which there is no traditional medical help available such as chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), fibromyalgia, multiple allergies, multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), and environmental illness.

As EFT does not require the use of needles as acupuncture does it can be used for self-treatment and the official EFT website provides a 79 page manual for free download so anyone may learn the basic technique for use on themselves or others. More advanced training is available for those who wish to become certified EFT practioners.
