Can Male Thrush Be Cured On Its Own?

Man embarrassed by male thrush or jock itch

Thrush is a yeast infection that is caused by a fungus or mold named Candida. Therefore, it's also known as candidiasis.

Do you doubt or know that the infection you suffer from is male candidiasis? If yes, keep reading to get the answer to the most asked question: "thrush can go away on its own or not!" Also, learn about its symptoms, prevention, and treatment.

How Do You Identify Male Thrush?

Thrush in men is less common than female thrush. But that's not a guarantee of you not falling prey to this painful and irritating infection. Thrush itself doesn't come with any specific symptoms in men. But the inflammation of the penis and foreskin leads to the following issues:-

  • Difficulty in pulling the foreskin back (retract the foreskin).
  • Swelling in the tip of the penis.
  • A visibly red rash at the tip of the penis.
  • The painful experience of urinating or during sex.
  • Sore & itchy penis.
  • A cottage cheese-like white or creamy discharge from the penis. It may or may not be smelly.

Can Thrush Go Away on its Own?

Thrush can go away on its own. But it's too big a risk to take because:-
  • Yeast infection can spread to other body parts if it doesn't go away on its own.
  • The symptoms of candidiasis are similar to STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection). Only your doctor can tell you that you have STI or candidiasis after diagnosis. So if you have STI and you delay the visit to the doctor, the treatment of the STI will also be delayed leading to further complications.

Remember to refrain from having sex if you have male candidiasis. It can make the infection worse. There are chances of your infection spreading to other body parts as well.

What are the Treatment Options for Male Thrush?

Your doctor can prescribe you topical creams and tablets. And you can go for over-the-counter medication as well. Clotrimazole, Miconazole, and Econazole are some of the most recommended topical creams to apply on the penis for treating yeast infection.

If you are more comfortable with tablets, you can opt for Fluconazole tablets. They get rid of the candida-friendly enzymes in your body. You can easily get these tablets and creams from a pharmacy or a big supermarket. But if you don't feel confident about your symptoms, it's better to get in touch with your healthcare provider.

How to Avoid Male Candidiasis?

You must remember that the fungal or yeast infection increases in a wet and hot environment. So the number one prevention would be not to keep your genitals in such conditions for a long time. To ensure that you can:-
  • Do not wear tight clothes/underwear/short/.
  • Always wear cotton undergarments and avoid synthetic wear.
  • Keep your genitals clean by washing them regularly. But don't use soaps and body washes with a strong fragrance.
  • Dry your penis thoroughly after washing it.
  • Don't have sex until it's cured if your partner has thrush.
  • Always shower after exercise, and pat dry your penis gently but thoroughly.
Don't ignore your symptoms of male thrush, thinking that it's rare. Talk to your pharmacist and doctor for diagnosis and the recommended cream or tablet. You can get rid of thrush quickly if you start its treatment timely. Even if you have STI and not candidiasis, timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial.
