Though over 54% of the world’s population now lives in urban areas, and that number is only expected to increase as the years go on, it is not the best for your health. Cities are working hard to be greener, improving their air quality and lowering their pollution, but their populations are working against them.
Thankfully, with green energy initiatives becoming increasingly popular after the Paris Agreement, including increased funding, we can hopefully expect greener, healthier cities in the future. If your health is already suffering now, however, one of the best things that you can do is move out of the city and into a more rural area.
Your Money Will Go Further
One of the biggest downsides for every city-dweller is the increased costs. Housing prices are high, living costs are high, and even public transport can set you back. You pay these increased prices for the conveniences city-living offers. If the pollution is hurting your health, however, moving to a rural or suburban area isn’t the end of your social life. Rather than trying all the newest restaurants or going to all the biggest shows, you will instead have your favourite haunts, be a regular, and enjoy making real connections with those that you meet. Such connections can greatly improve your quality of life, and could even relieve depressive symptoms.
Of course, there is also the added benefit of being able to afford more. Selling your city home to move to a more rural area will typically give you the pick of the crop in terms of houses. This is true whether you are retired and move far out to enjoy the natural landscapes or just move away from the downtown area and are 20 minutes outside the city. To reduce stresses, though, use conveyancing solicitors to ensure all the legal paperwork is dealt with smoothly.
Exercise Will Become Easier
When you have more access to the outdoors, exercise becomes easier. Walking flat city streets does relatively little for your health, but going on hikes or on trails challenges your body in new ways. Adopt a dog, and you can ensure you get out and enjoy the natural beauty of the world in your new home every single day, thus bettering your health with every step.
Slow Down and Enjoy Life
The physical health benefits of moving to a more rural location are numerous, but that doesn’t mean that the move won’t benefit your mental health as well. City living is fast-paced, stressful, and often socially isolated. Moving to a smaller community will allow you to slow down and make real friends wherever you go. Between the mental and physical benefits of moving for your health, you cannot go wrong.
In the past, those with the financial ability to relocate to the countryside when their health failed on them did so regularly. City living caused numerous health conditions, and a bout in the countryside was all the body needed to heal. The same is true today, though in less extremes. Move to a more rural neighborhood, reconnect with nature, and live your best life.
