Pain in the abdominal area is quite an unpleasant and dangerous issue that should alarm you. However, many women tend to endure pain instead of seeking proper medical attention. It is essential to understand that there are a lot of factors that can contribute to abdominal pain and most of them require special treatment. Here is a list of nine common causes of abdominal pain in women you shouldn’t ignore.

1. Endometriosis

Endometriosis is an unpleasant condition that can cause abdominal pain that is accompanied by severe menstrual cramping, heavy periods, and pain during sex. It develops when the endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus on the pelvic organs. It is better to start endometriosis treatment as early as possible to prevent severe pain and infertility

2. Urinary tract infection

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that occurs when the bacteria from the anus penetrate the urethra and bladder and cause unpleasant symptoms. The most common of them are:

- Burning sensations during urination
- Abdominal pain
- Cloudy urine
- Increased urgency to urinate

If left untreated, UTI can affect the urethra and kidneys and cause more severe symptoms and complications.

3. Constipation

Constipation can cause severe abdominal pain and discomfort. A poor diet that is low on fiber and plain water is deemed one of the most common causes of constipation. However, certain medications, pregnancy, and a sedentary lifestyle can also lead to problems with defecation. If you suffer from constipation, ask your healthcare provider about suitable treatment options.

4. Diarrhea

Diarrhea means loose stool and urgency to have a bowel movement. In most cases, it stops without any special treatment in a few days. But if diarrhea doesn’t disappear, it is essential to visit a doctor. Otherwise, you can get dehydration, severe abdominal pain, and fewer.

5. Hernia

A hernia occurs when an organ (intestines or stomach) is squeezed out through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. Many people with a hernia don’t experience any symptoms except for a bulge or lump in the affected area. But if it grows or causes painful sensations, you may need to treat a hernia surgically

6. Ectopic pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy means that the fertilized egg implants itself not in the uterus but in other organs. This condition often occurs in the fallopian tubes. Women that have an ectopic pregnancy may not experience any symptoms at first. But as the egg grows, it can stretch and even tear the fallopian tubes, Ectopic pregnancy can be life-treating and medical intervention is essential.

7. Ovarian cysts

In some women, ovarian cysts (fluid-filled sacs) can appear and disappear asymptomatically throughout the cycle, while in others, they can remain and cause severe abdominal pain. It is essential to monitor and treat ovarian cysts since they can burst or cause ovarian torsion.

8. Irritable bowel syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a group of intestinal symptoms that usually occur together. People with IBS usually experience pain in the abdominal area, bloating, constipation, and/or diarrhea. Unfortunately, there is no cure for IBS but you can manage its symptoms with the help of a diet, lifestyle changes, and taking probiotics.

9. Pelvic inflammatory disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) develops as a result of untreated sexually transmitted or naturally occurring infection. It causes abdominal pain, fever, abnormal vaginal discharge, and pain during sex. Without proper treatment, PID can lead to severe pain and infertility.

The bottom line

If you suffer from abdominal pain, it is essential to make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. Even though some of the aforementioned conditions can’t be cured, regular monitoring and treatment can ease their symptoms and improve your well-being.
