It becomes challenging to understand and think as to what lead to a friend, family or a known figure come to a point where they ended their life. You see someone normal in front of you, and some days down the line, you hear that they committed suicide. No one decision makes people do so. Many things pile up one after the other. Considering the statistics of people ending their lives, it is imperative to understand what makes them do so and how you can help them overcome that feeling.
Here are some tips that might help in the long run:
1. They are depressed.
People often choose a difficult way out because they are depressed and they don’t know what to do to let that depression not consume them and their thoughts. They see suicide as an ultimate solution.
2. They are impulsive.
Sometimes, people tend to take decisions in haste, they don't understand what they are doing, and later it is too late even to realise what happened. Impulsiveness often takes a bad turn when people take their life in the heat of the moment.
3. No one is hearing their cry for help.
Often people who are depressed are crying out for help. If you look closely, you will hear them say normal things with such pain. They also do certain things a certain way that makes you wonder what is wrong with them and if at all you neglect all this, you are only pushing them towards the never-ending loop of doubting themselves and not valuing their life the way they should be.
4. They have made a mistake that they think can’t be undone.
Usually, when people do something wrong and try to fix it and don’t succeed, they think that disappearing or ending things for once and for all is the only option left. This is the reason most people try to take their lives when they make a mistake because they are not brave enough for a confrontation.
5. They don’t like their present life situation.
People want to end their lives because they are not happy with what is going on in their life at present. They fear change but want it as much as they’d want anything else. Hence, they feel, to come out of their present situation, they should eliminate themselves out.
To help them, you should let them know that they are not alone in their journey and that you don’t sympathise with them. Instead, you empathise. This is one thing that will bring them back to you. Make sure you continuously suggest them ways through which they can release the heaviness in their heart and make peace with the things that are happening in their life. You can recommend them to focus on other things. You can also introduce them to try online venting, which is also anonymous.
