A Natural History Study of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Rehabil Psychol. 2011 Feb;56(1):32-42. A natural history study of chronic fatigue syndrome. Jason LA, Porter N, Hunnell J, Brown A, Rademaker A, Richman JA. DePaul University. Abstract   Objective: There is a need for natural history chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) studies from random, community-based, multi-ethnic populations. Design: The present study examined the course of CFS from Wave 1 to Wave 2, which spanned over a ten year period of time, and, assessed whether socio-environmental and symptomatology factors were associated with CFS status over the ten year period. Results: There was relative stability over time on critical measures of disability, fatigue, support, optimism and coping over time. One cardinal symptoms of CFS, post-exertional malaise, best differentiated the CFS group from the others. By Wave 2, of the original group of 32 individuals diagnosed with CFS, 4 had died, and 24 were found and agreed to be re-evaluated, and of this group, 16 continued to have...

Video of Dr. Jose Montoya speaking at Stanford University on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Uploaded by StanfordHospital on Mar 11, 2011 Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a disorder that causes extreme fatigue that is unchanged with rest and which interferes with one's ability to attend to daily activities. It is often accompanied with an array of symptoms that can include muscle pain, memory problems, headaches, pain in multiple joints, sleep problems, sore throat and tender lymph nodes. Since other illnesses can cause similar symptoms, CFS is hard to diagnose. Dr. Montoya discusses CFS and current research regarding diagnosis and treatment and the possible CFS-infection connection: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Riybtt6SChU The Stanford CFS website: http://chronicfatigue.stanford.edu/

Ferritin, Iron and Hypothyroidism

by Janie Patient Advocate and Author of "Stop The Thyroid Madness"   Ferritin, Iron and Hypothyroidism A large body of thyroid patients have been surprised to discover that being hypothyroid also results in having low Ferritin, or storage iron. Ferritin is an iron-storage protein which keeps the iron in a dissolvable and usable state, making the iron non-toxic to cells around it.  So when Ferritin is measured via a blood test, it is basically measuring the iron you have tucked away for safe use. Why is measuring storage iron important? To find out more please click onto the below weblink: http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ferritin/

Hashimoto's Disease Can Affect Quality of Life Even When Thyroid Is Normal

by Mary Shomon Patient advocate and Author March 7, 2011 New research published in the journal Thyroid has shown that Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease and the most common cause of hypothyroidism -- an underactive thyroid -- in the U.S., has an effect on quality of life. Specifically, the study found that even when the thyroid levels are "normal," Hashimoto's thyroiditis can increase symptoms and reduce the quality of life: http://thyroid.about.com/b/2011/03/07/hashimotos-thyroid.htm?nl=1
