What Causes Tinnitus?

Tinnitus, commonly referred to as ringing in your ears, is a common audiology problem that affects approximately 15-20% of people. The Mayo Clinic explains this is not a condition on its own but is a symptom of something else going on in the body.   To understand tinnitus, it is good to understand the full range of symptoms. This is not just a ringing sound with no apparent source. Rather, it can be a ringing, buzzing, roaring, hissing, clicking or humming sound. It can be high pitched or a low tone. The key is that it is not associated with something in the environment generating the noise.   There are two types of tinnitus, subjective and objective.
