What to Do With a Cut in Your Mouth?

A cut in the mouth can be caused by various factors, both internal (for example, a bite of the cheek) and external (for example, dental procedures). Although many mouth cuts require little treatment, others may be dangerous and need emergency care. These include direct facial injuries, deep lacerations on the inner cheek, gums or tongue and related tooth injuries. Minor injuries If the cut is small, try to rinse your mouth with cold or ice water. This decreases some of the blood vessels and can help ease pain and swelling. A cold compress to the outside of the cheek can provide the same effect. Some people prefer to roll an ice cube in their mouth until the bleeding stops and the pain decreases. If the cut is a little bigger and deeper, you may need to apply direct pressure to the injury. First and foremost you should wash your hands...

Clutter is one of the main reasons why some homes look unsightly. An old stack of magazines here, an empty bottle of perfume there, and before you know it, you’re settled in a messy living space. Ways You Can Reduce Light Pollution

The new comprehensive World Atlas of Artificial Night Sky Brightness has revealed that an increasing portion of our sky is being polluted by the artificial sky glow – atmospheric light scatter reflected from the electric lighting below. Apart from Milky Way being no longer visible to one-third of the population, the problem with light pollution goes much further than stargazing. Epidemiologists who have taken interest in the problem say that numerous conditions may derive from the disrupted circadian rhythms – our inner day/night clocks, while ecologists point out the adverse effects of artificial light to migratory birds and mammals. But what can we as individuals do to reduce it? Is there anyone in the room? The simplest, cheapest, and the most obvious way of fighting light pollution is to start turning lights off when no one needs them. While outdoor lighting has its time and place, illuminating dark areas like...

Health Impact of Noise at Work

Workplace-related hearing loss is one of the most common industrial health issues. Workers can be exposed to dangerously high noise levels in environments such as construction sites, foundries or textile mills. The most publicized effect of noise at work is the loss of hearing, a medical problem observed among coppersmiths as early as 1731. Short-term exposure to excessive noise can cause temporary hearing loss, with the duration from a few seconds to a few days, while longer exposure can cause permanent hearing loss. Hearing loss that occurs over time is not always easy to identify, with workers themselves not realizing their hearing is becoming impaired. Apart from noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), work-related noise has other negative health effects.  Noise-induced hearing loss As the most common occupational disease in the developed world, NIHL accounts for about one-third of all work-related diseases, even ahead of skin and respiratory problems. It’s usually caused...

Electronic Cigarettes & the Vaping 'Trend’: Does Science Support Health Benefits?

A man smoking an e-cigarette
It wasn’t a 100% victory and there’s still a long way to go, but Public Health England dropped a bombshell in August. Seemingly out of nowhere, one of the most important health bodies in the country declared that not only are e-cigarettes 95% less harmful than tobacco, but could also become an important weapon in fighting smoking by being dispensed as a licensed medicine. Veteran vapers enjoyed a wry smile and carried on – because it was not really news to them. Anti-tobacco campaigners, cancer sufferers, health practitioners and e-cigarettes traders and scientists have long held the belief that replacing a stick that contains several thousand toxins with one that contains far fewer can only be a healthier option. Surely? What the PHE statement did do was bring vaping back into the public consciousness, or introduce some people to it in the first place. BBC Radio 5 live ran a...

The Prenatal Ecosystem And Factors That Affect Its Functionality

Fetus in the womb
To state that the womb in which a woman carries her baby is yet another ecosystem may sound like an awkward metaphor, but it is actually quite true. In fact it is by far one of the most beautiful ecosystems ever; not only is it responsible for sustaining human life, but is also responsible for bringing one into the global ecosystem. Thus providing a growing fetus with the right environmental essentials is of utmost importance for its proper growth, development and nourishment. And naturally, as every ecosystem is affected by its environment, there are of course three key factors that affect a prenatal ecosystem; a woman’s diet, the state of her health and disease and the effects of drugs. The importance of a healthy diet They say when a woman sets on to her journey of becoming two – or more, she needs to begin eating for two as well....
