You Are Infinite Potential! So Be Young At Heart!
A yoga teacher of mine once told me: “It is not the number of years you have lived that makes you grow old. You become old when you stop progressing.”
As with anything in life, it is perspective that matters most.
When we “give up” on life or on ourselves, we stagnate and our body begins to age.
In Chinese medicine and in other holistic systems of health, stagnation leads to disease. Stagnation is when something in the body stops moving. This could be an emotion, a thought, body fluids or blood.
When we eat too much, this slows down the movement of food through the gastrointestinal tract. When food does not move, it can ferment and rot. This leads to bloating, gas, fatigue and heartburn. Over time, eating too much too often overwhelms the entire body—not just the gastrointestinal system.
Our emotional and psychological centers can also stagnate. Overwhelming the body with a rollercoaster of emotions, or with worry and anxiety, can inhibit the natural ebb and flow of our life force.
Spend time watching a child explore his or her environment.
Children have a knack for finding wonder in the smallest of things. You may notice that everyday objects bring the greatest thrill! Recapture this sense of wonderment. Wonderment keeps the heart and the mind youthful.
On a biochemical level, the simple act of wonder can stimulate the release of a hormonal cascade that supports overall wellbeing.
If wonderment is difficult for you to feel, start with sensory experiences. Sometimes called mindfulness, when we pay attention to small sensory experiences, like the taste of our favorite food or the layers of scent in a beautiful flower, we exercise our muscle of wonderment.
Surround yourself with bright colors.
Color is a celebration of life! Beautiful colors can uplift our spirits and even help our bodies heal on a physical or emotional level.
Color therapy, also called chromotherapy, has been a diagnostic and therapeutic tool in medicine for centuries. Today, the most well known form of color therapy is light therapy, which uses specific wavelengths of light to treat things like skin disorders or depression.
Light contains a full spectrum of color. Both light and color are used in medicine because they stimulate the body’s natural healing response.
Express that lovin’ feeling.
You know the saying, “holding a grudge.”
Holding on to a negative feeling, or even a negative relationship, will block anything new from coming into our lives.
When we express and receive love, we actually support the movement of certain hormones and chemicals in the body. As these hormones and chemicals circulate, our receptivity to them increases.
Avoid wasting your time on useless irritations. Instead, seek out love and give love. When you feel negative emotion, tap on your “karate chop point” (below your pinkie on the bottom side of your hand) and repeat to yourself, “Even though I am upset, I deeply and completely love and accept myself”.
Nourish Your Inner Ecosystem
The Inner Ecosystem is a term I coined to describe the environment of living microorganisms that exist in our digestive tract.
