by Nikolas Hedberg, D.C.
The Thyroid Alternative is a revolutionary book detailing the underlying causes of thyroid disorders and how to treat them naturally. 28 million Americans suffer from thyroid disease yet 90% of them are not treated adequately by conventional medicine. Dr. Hedberg clearly explains why one patient's thyroid disorder may have a completely different underlying cause from another. This book is a must for all of those suffering from thyroid disease and for health care practitioners who are managing patients with thyroid disease. Students in any healing arts program will also greatly benefit due to this book's educational capacity. Patients no longer have to live with thyroid-related symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, depression, cold hands and feet, hair loss, constipation and sleep problems.
From the Inside Flap
Dr. Nikolas Hedberg, a gifted functional medicine physician and respected colleague, has done a masterful job at explaining the extremely complex subject of endocrinology from a functional perspective in this book. Thyroid disorders are occurring at epidemic proportions in the Western world, particularly the U.S., and there are many reasons for this. Dr. Hedberg tackles many of these difficult issues, including the role of stress, lifestyle, diet, toxins, and autoimmunity in thyroid disease. If you are suffering from a thyroid problem this book is a must read. It will allow you to understand all the complex factors that may be playing a role in your condition, and it will prepare you to serve as a knowledgeable self-advocate with your physicians, who often do not recognize, nor appreciate, all of these associated factors. It will allow you to exhaust all possible options in addressing your condition, while improving your overall health in the process, before resorting to hormone replacement therapy. If hormone replacement therapy is required you will understand all of your options, and not just the ones generally presented to you by standard primary care physicians and endocrinologists who do not practice from a functional medicine perspective.

From the Back Cover
"I have seen many books on thyroid dysfunction over the years. Virtually all of them suggested a comprehensive examination of the problem based on the totality of published research. In reality, though, I found these books to be extremely limited in focus. In contrast, Dr. Hedberg has written a book that I feel truly features a comprehensive overview of the best published research on the nature of thyroid disorders and what to do about them. This book is a must read for anyone who wants to have a thorough, research-based understanding of the realities of thyroid dysfunction."
-Jeffrey Moss, DDS, CNS, DACBN
"This is an important and long overdue book on natural healing approaches to treating thyroid conditions. As Dr. Hedberg pointedly explains, thyroid conditions are related to a variety of body functions and rarely exist on their own in isolation. A true whole body approach is therefore required to thoroughly treat this complex condition. This book is a must read for patients everywhere suffering from fatigue, weight gain, and depression who are looking for solutions that really work."
-Daniel Kalish, D.C. author of "Your Guide to Healthy Hormones"
"Thyroid dysfunction is very complex and the average conventional physician normally does little to help find the cause of the disease. Dr. Hedberg provides not just the patient but the physician with the knowledge that he/she must have to effect a cure. I would recommend any physician who treats thyroid dysfunction to return to the basics of endocrinology and use this book as a guide to effectively correct the problem - not just treat the symptoms".

Dr. Nik, as he is affectionately called by his patients, knew early in life that he wanted to be a doctor and help people. He was fascinated with the human body and its remarkable ability to heal. Convinced that true healing was and is possible if an individual is given the correct tools, he has brought his lifelong dream to fruition and has treated hundreds of patients with success.
Dr. Hedberg uses a variety of state-of-the-art diagnostic tests to determine the actual cause of a patient's health problem. He sees many individuals with thyroid disorders, Lyme disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, hormone imbalances and autoimmune diseases. Through his virtual practice via the Internet and telephone consultations, he is able to work with anyone regardless of location.
