Blue light versus regular lightboxes for SAD

Discussion started by Maff 12 years ago

Curious to know if anyone has seen additional benefit using a predominantly blue wavelength lightbox (e.g. Philips goLITE BLU Light Therapy Device) over a regular lightbox for relieving the symptoms of SAD?

Good to hear some personal experience with the golite True. I used a few large traditional 10,000lux light boxes but did not find them particularly effective.

I have also found there is no substitute for natural sunlight but like you have adrenal fatigue and my circadian rhythm is out of whack so getting to sleep early and waking up to early to maximise my daylight exposure is very difficult!

the best therapy I have found for SAD is to get up before or while the sun is rising. Works perfectly every time that very day. Sleeping in for me causes depression, loss of energy, moodiness etc. I have insomnia and adrenal fatigue so its super hard to get up early but its a sure cure for the blues. HTH

I have a golite and I really like it. I had another light box that I found too bright and annoying to use. The blue light works the same (wakes me up, gives energy) but I havent found either of them to be helpful for my type of insomnia

A quick review of studies on the subject seems to suggest that blue LED devices are AS effective as 10,000 lux regular lightboxes but not better. See this study for example - onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/da.20538/…
