    My FMT story and questions...

Obviously this is an area where only a medical professional can give you valid advice on. That being said, I think you really only have a few options. 1) You can do FMT again 2) you can take antibiotics to "reset" yourself or 3) wait it out and hope it's a flare... I'd like to know what you end up doing, so keep us updated!

If anyone is in the UK then you can have FMT done by a clinic that does colonic irrigation and have now decided to specialise in FMT. Thanks for the feedback idkwia, that is encouraging to know. Maybe the increase in my brain fog and feeling of being "drunk" since the FMT was bound to happen either way and was only coincidental? I dont know. Maybe i will never know. All i know is that i am tired of ME/CFS and IBS. I really dont know how to heal my gut so i can recover from this illness. Ive done the FMT. Theres nothing left to do! But theres always hope!

FMT Clinical Study Results - New England Journal of Medicine

Doorie, I believe my gut issues also arose (or were at least significantly worsened) by repeated prescribing of broad spectrum antibiotics for superficial infections of the ENT variety. I obtained my full medical records a few years back and learned that I had been given 6 courses in the 8 months leading up to my development of M.E./Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I had pre-existing and frequent gut symptoms and these only worsened after developing ME/CFS. I believe antibiotics are partially responsible for both. I have spoken to many enlightened doctors and gastroenterologists since who have all baulked at the thought of a child being given so many courses of antibiotics as the immune system is still developing. Thanks for the extra information about the Dutch study. It's a shame in a way that it was cut short as 120 participants is usually enough to achieve statistically significant results. It looks like a quality study so the researchers no doubt used a 'Power Calculation' during the study design to make sure this was the case. On the other hand the reason for the study being cut short is very positive indeed in terms of the efficacy of the FMT treatment! It will be interesting to see the results that come out of the Canadian study. Their use of participants own fecal matter for FMT as a placebo in the control group is an excellent methodology. Let's wait and see!

    FMT side effects?

Wendy, In Sky Curtis's book she describes side effects that may occur. Her son was cured of crohn's/colitis using FMT, however, it took many months of FMT transfusions for this to occur. In the intro to her book, she states: "Side effects of infusions can include night sweats, fevers, random bouts of blood or diarrhea after there has been none for weeks, incredibly stinky gas, and various types of poo, ranging from liquid to wormies, to rabbit raisons. Sometimes a person who has been free from pain suddenly experiences a sudden bout of pain. All of these events can convince a person they are not becoming well, when in fact, each one of these symptoms can be a very positive indication that the new bacteria is very busily reproducing and recolonizing an ill person’s intestines. " Good luck to you. Cheers,

Matt, It's really been gaining steam over the last few months. A recent reuters article mentioned it becoming standard treatment for C Diff. An excerpt from the article "For patients hit hardest by the bacterium Clostridium difficile, getting a "stool transplant" could become a standard treatment within just a few years. Just as blood banks and sperm banks are now commonplace, stool banks may soon dot the landscape." The full article is here: Title: Human stool treatment upends race to treat colon germ Link: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/30/us-bacteria-stool-treatment-idUSBRE8AT09D20121130 I also read somewhere, although I can not find the article, that billing codes for insurers in the US for this procedure are expected to become available in the first half of 2013. The FDA gave stool "investigational drug" status, which allows billing codes for the procedure to be created. That should go a long way in making the procedure more available in the US.

I also believe differences could account for differences in disease patterns between African nations and the Western world. Interesting stuff!

Hi Clare, I went through 10 days of it last summer and had no change, either positive or negative, unfortunately. My donor and I really put a lot of effort into it and a fair amount of money into testing as well but unfortunately it didn't work out for me. Don't be put of however as others have had much more positive experiences, particularly Tracy Mac who has posted a lot about her experiences with faecal transplants (both at Dr. Borody's clinic in Australia and DIY at home). Best thing to do is read through the big discussions in this group if you can. Quite a few of the members have documented their experiences. Good luck if you go ahead with it!

Hi there; I found it really worthwhile reading the book you refer to here-"Porphyria: The Ultimate Cause of Common, Chronic and Environmental Illnesses. With Breakthroughs in Diet, Supplements, and Energy Balancing" And I gather others found it had new and helpful info..... as per testimonials on Prof. Rochlitz's web. http://wellatlast.com/testimonials.html .................. it takes some thought to put together a rotation diet and check on eliminating or reducing or spacing out supplements but the results have been great for my daughter...... in combo with the energy balancing techniques. Once she pieced it all together and put it into practice, it's all just part of her everyday life and routine now............... she's in much much better health now ............. her chiropractor said "whatever your doing, is really making improvements".

Hey all, just wanted to chip in and agree with Tracy on the SIBO/hypochlorhydria issue. If you have low stomach acid and SIBO it is likely that the former is a major contributor to the latter so if it were me I would focus treatment on supplementing Betaine HCl and perhaps something to improve bile flow if this is also an issue. Then hit the SIBO hard with antibiotics (tested to be effective against your particular bugs if possible) and agents that act to breakdown biofilms e.g. Interfase from Klaire Labs.

Hi Jamison, I don't mind at all. Thanks for the feedback! It sounds like you are working with an excellent doctor there. I actually had misgivings about the second round of EPD before the horrible results as the official EPD instruction booklet does state not to give the shots until any gut dysbiosis has been satisfactorily treated. My experience illustrates just how seriously this advice should be taken! I think my doctor had assumed my dysbiosis was treated and/or did not place much importance on it...

thanks Maff for the info and link. I came across a very old article (British Medical Journal1913)discussing streptoccal infections of the gut..(or just an abundance of strep bacteria in the feces) and the symptoms matched my own. This particular paper noted a high cure rate using autogenous vaccines. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2299096/pdf/brmedj07279-0012.pdf Do you know anything about autogenous vaccines for gut infections? This was my first time reading about it and I was very amazed at the cure rate. Is this being done today by any chance? Also wanted to ask where you found info on streptococcal infections being related to insomnia? thanks again!

    donor's quality

I definitely recognize the challenges in choosing an ideal donor. It would be great if there were a donor bank or if we all had enough money to go to the Probiotic Research Centre in Australia (I keep thinking... If I won the lottery - the first thing I would do is go visit Dr. Borody). But the best you can do is 1) find someone that you think would be willing to help you 2) have them screened based on the recommended tests and 3) hope/pray for the best! My donor and I were both concerned when I started out because we just didn't know if we missed some test or if I would (for some reason) get sicker. But I know for many of us here... We have been sick for a long time (decades), tried every supplement/treatment imaginable and this has been a last resort. I really think you have to feel like you are dying before you are willing to inject someone else's poo inside your own butt! But Tracy said it best in her blog: "...for me it was a risk worth taking as I could not continue to live with the condition, in particular the mental symptoms. You will need to make your own decision."

My Experience with FT for UC - MikeH

Hey guys. Sorry for not posting any updates. I'm rubbish at doing this. I try to keep up a blog as well but I just think i'm not the blogging type. I have never been able to keep a diary either! I've just come back from a week's holiday which was great timing as it gave me a chance to chill and see the results of the FT. Definite improvements! Not the miracle cure I might have hoped for but i'd say things are the best they have been for about two years. During the holiday (which was at centerparks and quite active) I was going 2/3 times in the morning, quite well formed and with no blood and then was confident the rest of the day that I could be out and about without worrying. I didn't ever stray too far from the nearest toilet but I really think the distraction and the physical exercise helped keep me from getting into the anxiety vicious cycle that I often can find myself in. Energy levels have been much better and i'm generally a lot happier. BMs still smell like my donors so i'm taking that as a good sign. Plan now is to carry on with the FT once a week for a while and see what happens. It could still be a transient success and things will revert back but I hope not. One theory I had was that the FT wouldn't cure me but would give me a better foundation to build on and give my gut the break it needs from the bad guys to continue to heal. This could be what is happening. I managed about 9 infusions in the time I had before going on hols including a couple of days where I did one mid afternoon and then one overnight as well! Didn't use the imodium again after the first go. Even one tab was just too much for me. I think the problem I had with the first infusion was that it was too runny and therefore harder to hold. It may have also been that the bowel prep was still in my system too I guess. Hard to say for definite. I would even recommend that those people going to try FT give it a full trial run before going for that first infusion. I think the first one is key as this is the point when the bowel is at its emptiest. With regards to the syringe - didn't work out. I think they were meant for single use only and after a couple of uses had lost its lubrication making it damn near impossible to push the plunger down. I went for the empty fleet enema bottle method after that. I'll let you know if I get further improvements but I do wonder if FT has done all it can for me. Its up to good ole supplements, probiotics, diet, exercise and positive thinking now! Good luck to everyone else and thanks for all your sage advice. Mike

For about 8 years I lived every day believing that "today would be the day that I would find my cure!" And I really believed it- and I spent every day searching. Around year nine I started to face "reality" and stopped searching (well searching so much =) I guess this is what happens when you stop searching..I hope!

Believe it or not these make up 90%+ of the entire gut microflora so most tests are only testing 10% tops!" I remember you writing about the importance of getting the anaerobic bacteria in there. But can't find where. Anyways, do you have any sources for how long they can survive in air? It has gone several hours from preparation of HPI mix, until HPI via NG tube with me...
