Tonight I will be appearing on a Channel 4 TV show in the UK named 'The Health Detectives'. I filmed an interview last year discussing my personal experiences of suffering from abnormal gut fermentation and 'auto-brewery syndrome' and found out today it will be part of this show tonight.

Also featured in the 30 minute documentary is a separate piece investigating faecal (fecal) transplants; a treatment I have also tried personally and which has been discussed in detail here on EiR in the past.

It should be a really interesting watch for anyone suffering from unexplained gut problems and I hope readers in other countries will be able to see the show on TV or online very soon. I'd love to know what you thought of the show if you do catch it!

They had 6 months to let me know but gave me only hours notice Jodie, seems the norm from my growing TV experience! Did you watch it and what did you think?
I hate watching myself on film so haven't plucked up the courage yet. The feedback I've had has all been along the lines that I got my points across well but was edited down to the briefest appearance! I'm told they also didn't explore the issue enough and had a typically dismissive doctor contradict most of what I'd said (could have guessed that would happen!). The best show I've been on remains Galileo made by ProSiebenSat.1 for the German-speaking countries I think...

Well as far as your appearance went, pretty much blink and you missed it! I don't know how much of your time you gave them but I'm sure it was much more than shown. Wasn't very enlightening really.. they gave more time to other subjects & I remember one being really interesting, but dang forgotten what it was now :b

Ah now I remember! Fecal transplants used in a London NHS hosp - proving to be 100% effective against C.Diff ..

I've watched it now Jodie and see what you mean! I traveled from Middlesbrough to London and spent about an hour and a half filming. I explained everything in great detail, referencing several renowned doctors and respected labs who'd all diagnosed me over a span of 15 years in an interview lasting about 20 minutes...twice over! The most annoying thing is I felt it was the best interview I've ever given and the crew thought it was great and spent ages asking me their own questions chatting off camera. Unfortunately it's not the crew that make the editing choices and I'm sure the producers consulted a mainstream gastroenterologist who just contradicted and dismissed everything I'd said. Hey-ho, from now on when TV come calling I shall be setting my fee and they can take it or leave it, simple!

I am very glad they covered fecal transplants for C. diff though. This is a treatment that is increasingly being used in more and more hospitals when antibiotics fail and reportedly has a remarkable success rate of something like 95%. It was a doctor in Glasgow who was first using it routinely in the UK I believe. I'd like to see it tested in other GI conditions (and even non-GI) as restoring the gut microbiome to a healthy state has huge potential in contributing to the therapeutic armory of the future, particularly with antibiotic resistance and 'superbugs' like MRSA an increasing issue...
