Undenatured whey (and non-denatured whey - even higher quality) is a form of whey that is processed at much lower temperatures and put through a meticulous filtering process to maintain purity. As a result, premium undenatured whey products contain many components such as biologically active proteins, lactoferrin, and immunoglobulins which are destroyed in the processing of regular whey protein powders.

One thing that seems to be common to all environmental illnesses it is that patients show signs of increased oxidative stress (damage from free radicals) and correspondingly low levels of glutathione, the body's master antioxidant. The evidence for this is particularly strong in autism, chronic fatigue syndrome (Me/CFS) and fibromyalgia. Low glutathione levels impact on almost function of the body, particularly detoxification and immune response. It is therefore important to address this situation.

Poor detoxification due to glutathione deficiency leads to inefficient clearance of toxins, whether environmental or generated by normal metabolism, from the body. Toxins then build up and are stored away in body tissues, particularly fatty tissues, and the patient may become hypersensitive to such toxins.

Glutathione is also a powerful anti-viral and anti-microbial substance. High levels of glutathione have been shown to inhibit the replication of viruses and intracellular pathogens. Conversely when glutathione deficiency is present viruses actually accelerate their replication.

According to Dr. Paul Cheney, a renowned ME/CFS expert, undenatured whey is the most effective way to raise low glutathione levels in the body. It contains the amino acids cysteine, glycine and glutamic acid, from which glutathione is manufactured, in their most bioavailable forms.

Undenatured whey may therefore aid in the restoration of healthy glutathione levels and the consequent improvement in detoxification and immune function.

In addition to the immune boosting effects of glutathione undenatured whey contains other components such as lactoferrin which also have potent antimicrobial action.
