Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Techniques (NAET) comprises a number of techniques derived from allopathic medicine, oriental medicine and acupuncture, chiropractic, kinesiology and nutrition.
NAET was developed by Dr. Devi Nambudripad who was born in India but has lived and worked in California, USA since 1976. She first qualified as a Registered Nurse before studying acupuncture and completing a PhD in Oriental Medicine. She then went on to become a qualified chiropractor (D.C.), kinesiologist and finally a licensed medical doctor (M.D.).
She developed NAET as she searched for a solution to her own health concerns which included allergies and sensitivities to a multitude of substances, drawing on her now extensive knowledge of both Western and Eastern medicine.
As suggested by the name, NAET is used to eliminate allergies, desensitizing an individual to substances which cause symptoms. Dr. Nambudripad defines an allergy as: "...an adverse physical, physiological, and/or psychological response of an individual towards one or more substances also known as allergens." In the practice of NAET classical IgE-mediated allergies are treated in the same way as sensitivities, hypersensitivities and intolerances (non-IgE
In simplistic terms based on the theory of oriental medicine allergic reactions manifest when there is an energy imbalance in the body which results in the body responding inappropriately to harmless substances (allergens). The various techniques that comprise the NAET system aim to restore balance to the energy system of the body so that it once again functions normally and allergic reactions no longer occur.
NAET is used to treat allergies to literally anything including foods, chemicals, pollens, animals, molds, metals (jewelry), and latex. It is also used to treat conditions where allergies contribute including chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, lupus, depression, asthma, and arthritis. NAET was developed in 1983, and Dr. Nambudripad started teaching it to other health professionals in 1989. There are now about 8500 NAET practitioners, most of them resident in North America, with 1300 in Europe. The technique is now practiced by medical doctors, acupuncturists, chiropractors and other medical professionals.
